A recent Reddit post by NagatoroGaming pointed out that the game Secret of Magia has seen a surprising surge in popularity on SteamDB, jumping to over 9,000 concurrent players. Since the post, that number has climbed even higher, peaking at 9,915. This represents an incredible increase of nearly 12,000% in player count over the past month! Before this, the 2D RPG hadn’t exceeded 3,218 concurrent players, a record set in November 2020. Gamers are puzzled by this sudden boost, as there doesn’t seem to be any clear reason for it. The game is a decade old, hasn’t gained traction on social media, and has “Mixed” reviews on Steam – currently 51% positive based on 804 reviews. Furthermore, Secret of Magia hasn’t received an update since 2017, so it’s not due to new content either.
Why Does Secret of Magia Have So Many Steam Players?
A popular idea on Reddit was that the recent surge in players for the game was caused by bots trying to collect Steam Trading Cards. Many inexpensive games are targeted by bots that automatically play to earn these cards, which can then be sold for a profit. While the cards themselves aren’t worth much in US dollars, exchange rates can make them valuable to players in other countries. Interestingly, the game Secret of Magia has had trading cards available since it launched, so it’s unclear why bots would suddenly start farming them now. The game is currently on sale for 72%, costing only $0.55, though it’s been even cheaper before without reaching this player count. Because of how Steam works, it’s impossible to know for sure if these players are bots – it’s all just speculation. However, the game’s SteamDB chart shows a strange dip – a drop from over 9,000 players to around 5,400, followed by a full recovery within 10 minutes – which is definitely worth noting.
