Two Big Ghost of Tsushima Side Projects Shouldn't Be Just a Red Herring

As a gamer who’s been around the block more times than I care to remember, I can confidently say that Ghost of Tsushima has left an indelible mark on the gaming landscape. Four years after its initial release, it continues to be one of PlayStation’s strongest IPs, and it feels like Sucker Punch and Sony are just getting warmed up. The success of this samurai epic has been nothing short of remarkable, and it’s no wonder that a sequel seems inevitable at this point.

Despite The Last of Us Part 2 releasing a month prior, Ghost of Tsushima still achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success when it came out in July 2020. Sucker Punch’s most successful game in the US to date, Ghost of Tsushima was also the 7th best-selling game of 2020. Its success persisted even after the release of its Director’s Cut in August 2021.

Four years since its debut, Ghost of Tsushima is widely recognized as one of PlayStation’s most robust intellectual properties, and it seems that Sucker Punch and Sony are merely scratching the surface of what they can achieve with this franchise. While an official sequel has yet to be announced, a Ghost of Tsushima 2 appears increasingly likely. This conviction intensifies each time Ghost of Tsushima makes news headlines, which is happening more frequently now as two separate spin-off projects related to the game are in development.

Ghost of Tsushima’s Future Is Looking Bright

Ghost of Tsushima Is Getting a Live-Action Adaptation

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the exciting news that dropped in March 2021, mere months after Ghost of Tsushima’s debut. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions confirmed they were working on a live-action adaptation of the game! And get this – Chad Stahelski, the mastermind behind the John Wick series and a renowned stunt performer, is set to direct and produce the Ghost of Tsushima movie! What a time to be alive for fans like us.

Information about the live-action adaptation of “Ghost of Tsushima” has been scarce, with only sporadic updates over the past three years. Recently, there have been whispers that renowned Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada might be part of the cast, possibly portraying protagonist Jin Sakai’s uncle. At present, no official release date for the “Ghost of Tsushima” movie has been announced.

Ghost of Tsushima Is Getting an Animated Adaptation

Before the popular game “Ghost of Tsushima” makes its transition to live-action films, it’s going to experience an animated spinoff with the upcoming “Secret Level”. This animated series is produced by Blur Studio, who are also behind Love, Death + Robots. The announcement was made a few weeks ago during Gamescom Opening Night Live. Secret Level is an Amazon Prime streaming show consisting of 15 short stories, each one focusing on a different video game like “Mega Man”, “Armored Core”, “Sifu”, and “New World: Aeternum”.

It has been confirmed that the character Jin Sakai from ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ is set to make an appearance in one of the 15 episodes of ‘Secret Level’. The specific details about the episode’s content are still under wraps. However, based on his brief appearance in the teaser trailer, it appears that Jin Sakai may not have a standalone episode dedicated solely to ‘Ghost of Tsushima’, but instead could be seen alongside other confirmed PlayStation mascots such as Kratos from ‘God of War’ in a plot that seems to involve the merging of franchises.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Feels Inevitable

If the impressive sales figures of Ghost of Tsushima didn’t already suggest it’s just warming up, then its two upcoming adaptations offer even stronger proof. It appears that Sony has a strong faith in the Ghost of Tsushima franchise, leading many to believe that Ghost of Tsushima 2 is likely underway at Sucker Punch. However, fans may need to remain patient for a bit longer before any official announcement is made.
