7 Best Shonen Anime Series If You’re Craving Another My Hero Academia

After almost ten years and over 160 episodes, it feels like the end is near for the My Hero Academia anime. The final season just started, a little over a year after the manga finished, and it’s definitely bittersweet for fans like me. We’re all preparing to say goodbye to a series that’s been a huge part of our lives.

Now that My Hero Academia is finishing up, many fans are searching for a new anime to watch. There are plenty of choices available, but if you enjoyed My Hero and want something similar, here are a few series you might like.

Assassination Classroom

When it’s at its best, Assassination Classroom is as enjoyable and action-packed as My Hero Academia. The story centers around a class of students tasked with killing their unusual teacher, Koro-sensei—an alien who looks like an octopus—before he destroys the planet. This setup creates a lot of funny moments between Koro-sensei and his students.

While Assassination Classroom is generally funnier than My Hero Academia, it still features exciting action and a memorable group of characters. The story centers around a class trying to kill their teacher, Koro-sensei, but he surprisingly turns out to be dedicated to helping them improve, despite their attempts to assassinate him.

One-Punch Man

The One-Punch Man anime is facing criticism with the release of its third season, but it’s still worth watching, especially if you’re new to the series. The first season is fantastic, with truly impressive animation and visuals. While the second season initially disappointed some fans compared to the first, many are now looking back on it more favorably given the issues with the current season.

If you’re looking for a fun superhero anime, definitely check out One-Punch Man! Even though the main character, Saitama, can defeat enemies with a single punch, making things seem low-stakes, it’s a really funny show with great action scenes.

Soul Eater

Soul Eater is a beloved anime from the 2000s that many fans believe deserves a remake similar to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The story is set in Death City, where students at Death Weapon Meister Academy train to become either powerful weapon-wielding Meisters or their partners, the Demon Weapons – humans who transform into weapons. These Meister and Weapon pairs work together to collect souls, with the ultimate goal of evolving the weapons into Death Scythes, powerful tools used by the school’s principal, Lord Death, to combat the forces of evil.

Even though the anime didn’t cover the entire manga, Soul Eater remains a fantastic series, known for its original concept and memorable characters. With Bones wrapping up My Hero Academia, there’s hope we might hear some surprising news about Soul Eater soon.

Love After World Domination

If you’re looking for a superhero story with a strong romantic focus, consider Love After World Domination. It’s a fun series about Fudou Aikawa and Desumi Magahara, who are secretly dating despite being on opposite sides – he’s a hero, and she’s part of an organization trying to take over the world.

What makes this anime really special is the dynamic between the two main characters, Fudo and Desumi. Watching them work through their relationship issues is often funny and heartwarming. Although the anime is relatively short, and the original manga was unfortunately canceled before finishing its story, it’s still an enjoyable show that’s worth a look.

Charlotte

While Charlotte can sometimes be more emotionally intense than My Hero Academia, it’s still a good show to watch for something different. It was created by Jun Maeda, who is famous for Angel Beats! and visual novels like Clannad, Air, and Kanon. Because of that, you can expect a certain style and emotional depth from this series.

The series Charlotte is named after a comet that appears every 75 years, leaving behind a special dust that gives children who inhale it extraordinary powers. The story centers on Yuu Otosaka, who joins forces with Nao Tomori, the president of Hoshinoumi Academy’s student council, to find others with these abilities and shield them from those who would take advantage of them.

Food Wars!

Food Wars! is a really imaginative and over-the-top anime. It might seem strange at first, but it’s a unique take on the classic shonen genre, focusing on incredibly intense cooking competitions. The story centers on Souma Yukihira, who enrolls at the prestigious Tootsuki Culinary Academy with the goal of becoming a great chef and eventually running his family’s restaurant. The academy is known for being tough and having a low graduation rate, providing the perfect challenge for Souma to hone his skills. The question is: will he be able to survive and graduate?

The cooking competitions in Food Wars! are what the show is most known for, and they’re definitely memorable with their dramatic reactions and sometimes suggestive imagery. If you can look past that, you’ll discover a unique and exciting series that will leave you wanting to watch more after every episode. Just be warned: it might make you hungry!

A Certain Scientific Railgun

Following the success of A Certain Magical Index, A Certain Scientific Railgun tells the story of Misaka Mikoto and her friends. While Index combines both magic and science, Railgun primarily emphasizes the scientific side of their world.

Mikasa is an incredibly powerful psychic, ranking among the top 7 students – and the third strongest – in all of Academy City. The story centers around Mikasa and her friends as they investigate strange events happening around their city, gradually uncovering a hidden and unsettling truth about their home. If you enjoyed Index or are looking for another exciting super-powered story set in a school, Railgun is definitely worth watching.
