Stories about teenagers transported to another world often start with the involvement of gods or goddesses. A common trope in isekai anime and manga is to begin by having the main character die and then be revived by a deity, who usually offers them a comfortable new life as an apology. Sometimes, instead of a tragic accident, the gods directly summon the protagonist to a world in need of their help. These encounters are typically positive, but rarely, a god might actually dislike the person they’ve summoned.
Once this pattern emerges, the god or goddess often becomes the story’s primary antagonist, even if they don’t remain a frequent presence. They typically engineer the hero’s downfall, or even death, only to be proven wrong when that hero rises to become incredibly powerful. This often sets the stage for a quest for revenge.
Saga of Tanya the Evil has been omitted since, well, Tanya does not recognize Being X as a god.
5. Tsukimichi: Moonlith Fantasy
Cursed By The Goddess For Being “Ugly”
Okay, so I’m totally obsessed with Tsukimichi! Seriously, the manga is amazing – even better than the anime, which is saying something. The story kicks off with this really wild premise: the hero gets summoned to another world, but the goddess who brings him over immediately brands him as ‘ugly’! And then, just to make things worse, she basically dumps him in the middle of a dangerous desert full of monsters, expecting him to die. It’s a crazy setup, but it totally works!
The goddess didn’t stop there – she cursed the main character, preventing him from learning the local language. He can only communicate through magical floating text, at least when dealing with humans. Luckily, he received a blessing from other gods, allowing him to speak with monsters. He then sets out to build a haven for creatures often considered ugly or frightening, like orcs and goblins. It’s a story filled with overcoming challenges, determination, and exciting battles.
4. Failure Frame
Discarded And Sent To Die By The Goddess
The isekai genre occasionally produces a truly compelling story that unfortunately doesn’t translate well to anime. Failure Frame is one of those series – it’s a solid story in its original manga and novel form, but the anime adaptation doesn’t quite live up to its potential.
This is a tale of revenge against a goddess known for her extreme cruelty. She’s so heartless that she imprisons those she considers unworthy in a dungeon, where they become food for monsters. This manipulative and dangerous deity harbors many dark secrets and is likely responsible for all the suffering in her world.
3. Mushoku Tensei
A Manipulative God Will Do Anything To Ruin His Family
Watching the world of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, I’ve noticed it’s packed with incredibly powerful enemies who really put Rudeus and his companions through the wringer. But if I had to pick the most dangerous and truly awful of them all, it would definitely be Hitogami. He stands out as particularly vile compared to everything else they face.
The god who brought Rudeus to this new world is also working against some of his own family, trying to stop them from ever being born. This being is cruel and scheming, and readers of the original novels know the extent of their plans – but we won’t reveal those details to avoid spoiling the story for anime-only viewers. Essentially, this anime features a god who either hates Rudeus or resents what he stands for, seeing him as an obstacle to their goals.
2. The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated In Another World As An Aristocrat
He Didn’t Get So Far By Being Naive
This is a dark and compelling take on the popular ‘isekai’ genre. A highly skilled assassin is reborn into a fantasy world as the heir to a noble family—and continues to carry out political assassinations. Upon arriving in this new world, he encounters the realm’s goddess, but remembering his past life, he’s deeply suspicious of her motives.
The anime doesn’t explicitly show Lugh’s wariness of the goddess’s plans, but the manga and novel reveal his inner thoughts. He’s actively trying to avoid being manipulated by her. It’s becoming clear the goddess brought Lugh to this world for a hidden reason, and he’ll have to use all his intelligence to escape her trap.
1. The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious
Ristarte Hates Seiya And His Attitude, But A Dark Twists Awaits Ahead
This funny series follows a young goddess who’s trying to save the world with the help of an incredibly strong, but somewhat annoying, summoned hero. Despite his immense power, the hero is always striving to get even stronger. The goddess, Ristarte, constantly complains about summoning him and their relationship quickly sours, to the point where he treats her like a tool to pause time whenever he wants.
This hero is arrogant and headstrong, determined to win at any cost – even pushing himself beyond godly limits. The goddess who summoned him finds him incredibly annoying. However, she doesn’t realize there’s a hidden reason for his behavior, and a surprising connection between them beyond their shared mission to defeat the Demon Lord. The truth will eventually come out, and the revelation will be a devastating shock to everyone.
