Sony CFO Says Company Doesn’t Have Enough IP

As a die-hard gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing Sony‘s recent statement about their lack of original intellectual property (IP). On one hand, it’s disheartening to know that such a gaming powerhouse feels the need to focus more on creating their own IP. But on the other hand, I find myself chuckling at the irony – after all, who can forget the unforgettable journey of Kratos in God of War, or the thrilling adventures of Nathan Drake in Uncharted? Sony’s already got a treasure trove of successful original IPs that continue to captivate us!

Sony doesn’t think it has enough original intellectual property (IP).

In an interview with the Financial Times (thanks to PlayStation Lifestyle for bringing it to attention), Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Hiroki Totoki, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the development of original intellectual properties (IP) across the entire company, rather than just in one particular sector

He mentioned, “Regarding creating games, movies, or anime, we’ve not cultivated a large number of intellectual properties from their inception. We find ourselves lacking in the initial stages of IP creation, which is a challenge for us.”

In an interview, Hotoki mentioned that Sony has excelled at discovering a worldwide fanbase for content that have previously gained popularity within their domestic market

From a gaming standpoint, Sony has a number of original active IPs for PlayStation. Franchises such as God of War, Horizon, Uncharted continue to be successful from Sony first-party developers. The company also has a number of dormant first-party titles like Bloodborne (which Sony funded at FromSoftware), Killzone, SOCOM, Resistance, and more.
