While Dragon Ball boasts many memorable characters, Vegeta is arguably the most popular. Though Piccolo, Gohan, and Goku are also fan favorites, Vegeta has consistently evolved throughout the series more than any other character. He’s not just become more powerful with each new story arc; he’s also undergone significant personal growth, transforming from a selfish villain into a devoted family man who prioritizes the safety of others. Plus, he has some truly incredible transformations!
A notable moment occurred when Vegeta achieved his Ultra Ego transformation during the Granolah arc in Dragon Ball. This new form finally made him as powerful as Goku’s Ultra Instinct, and some fans even thought he briefly exceeded it. However, the form had limitations, preventing Vegeta from fully capitalizing on his newfound strength. As a result, many believe Vegeta will eventually perfect Ultra Ego, and it’s interesting to consider what a mastered version might look like.
Vegeta’s Ultra Ego, Explained
A Powerful Form Built On A Love For Battle And Pain

Vegeta’s Ultra Ego is a powerful transformation that taps into the Saiyan ability to get stronger while enduring damage. It essentially supercharges this natural trait, making the user significantly more powerful with every hit they take. However, it’s not something any Saiyan can do – you need to be able to become a God of Destruction first. While Goku could potentially learn this technique someday, Vegeta is currently the only one who has achieved it, and he might remain the sole master of Ultra Ego.
Called ‘Ultra Ego’ to reflect his past, this new form makes Vegeta stronger by absorbing attacks instead of dodging them. The more he’s hit, the more powerful he becomes. It requires him to embrace his primal Saiyan instincts and fully enjoy the fight – a return to the Vegeta fans first knew in the original Dragon Ball Z series.
While Ultra Ego is by far Vegeta’s most powerful form, it comes with a pretty obvious flaw.
The Shortcomings Of Ultra Ego
Where Does The Form Fall Short?

| Story Arc | Granolah the Survivor Saga |
Dragon Ball Super distinguished itself from previous series by introducing ‘God Ki,’ which allowed for exciting new transformations. The most notable of these was Ultra Instinct, a power Vegeta couldn’t achieve, leading him to develop his own form, Ultra Ego. While as strong as Ultra Instinct, Ultra Ego had a significant drawback: it became more powerful by receiving damage.
Although Vegeta’s Ultra Ego form allowed him to inflict massive damage, it had a significant weakness: he couldn’t withstand unlimited attacks. No matter how strong he became, he remained vulnerable and could be defeated if he wasn’t cautious. The form relies heavily on confidence, which could lead Vegeta to overestimate his durability and ignore his limits, mistakenly believing he could endure any blow. This wasn’t true, and the form also drained a lot of energy. Using Ultra Ego put a strain on Vegeta’s stamina, making it difficult to maintain for extended periods.

As seen in Dragon Ball Super chapter 87 with Black Freeza, even a single strong attack can overwhelm Vegeta in his Ultra Ego form. While this transformation is very powerful, it isn’t invincible and does have weaknesses.
How Would A Mastered Ultra Ego Work?
The Perfected Version of this Transformation
Ultra Ego is arguably the strongest transformation currently available to any character in the Dragon Ball universe. Though it lacks the precision of Ultra Instinct and the consistency of Beast, it compensates with overwhelming power, as demonstrated in Vegeta’s battles against Granolah and Gas. This immense power is based on the technique used by the Gods of Destruction, which explains its incredible strength.
The main problem with this transformation is its core concept: getting stronger by taking damage doesn’t intuitively feel effective. To make Mastered Ultra Ego truly work, it needs to address this criticism while still maintaining what makes Vegeta’s form different. This leads to a key question: how can a power-up based on receiving damage actually be beneficial?
Damage is nothing but fuel for me. Do you know what that means? I’m only getting stronger!
The explanation lies in Goku’s perfected Ultra Instinct. While Ultra Instinct’s main goal is to automatically dodge attacks, mastering it makes the user’s body exceptionally strong and resilient. We saw this during the fight with Moro, where Goku, in his perfected form, didn’t even flinch when Moro punched him, actually breaking Moro’s hand in the process.
A similar mechanic could be amazing for Ultra Ego. If Vegeta could withstand attacks without getting hurt, and instead use that damage to boost his power, the transformation could become incredibly strong. Essentially, opponents could throw everything they have at him, but it would only make him more powerful and create an opening for a devastating counterattack.
Mastered Ultra Ego could potentially be the strongest ability in the series, as it doesn’t appear to have any weaknesses. However, that might not be ideal. To balance its immense power, the form could significantly drain Vegeta’s stamina and energy, which would fit the nature of such a powerful transformation.
This development would finally put Vegeta on par with Goku and the strongest characters in Dragon Ball, but in a way that feels earned and natural. A common criticism of the series is that it often diminishes Vegeta’s accomplishments, so this is a welcome step towards consistently portraying him as a formidable force. Dragon Ball has a history of undercutting this beloved character, but fans have long hoped for Vegeta to receive the recognition he deserves, and Mastered Ultra Ego seems poised to deliver that.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
