Despite no current plans for a Red Dead Redemption TV series, actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan—known for his role in The Walking Dead—has publicly stated he’d love to play Arthur Morgan, the main character from Red Dead Redemption 2, if a show were to be made.
At a recent fan event, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was asked about playing Arthur Morgan in a possible TV series based on the video game Red Dead Redemption. He immediately responded that it’s the role he’s most interested in, which received a huge reaction from the audience.
Morgan shared that Westerns are his absolute favorite movie genre, with nothing else even coming close. He also mentioned his son loves playing the game Red Dead Redemption 2 and thinks it’s fantastic.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, known for his role in The Walking Dead, has expressed strong interest in playing Arthur Morgan in a potential Red Dead Redemption adaptation. He says he’d accept the role immediately, even jokingly offering to work for free. Of course, a successful adaptation of a game like Red Dead Redemption would almost certainly include a substantial salary for the lead actor.
Would Red Dead Redemption Make a Good TV Series?
Look, as much as I’d love to see a Red Dead Redemption movie – and the fan asking Morgan the question clearly feels the same way – it’s all just a dream right now. As of today, there isn’t even a project in the works. I’m guessing the rights to all of Rockstar’s games are tied up with big studios, but honestly, nothing’s really moved forward in years. The last time I heard anything about a Rockstar adaptation, it was a rumor about Daniel Radcliffe potentially starring in a Grand Theft Auto movie way back in 2015. It’s been quiet ever since.
I’m starting to genuinely believe a Red Dead Redemption movie could actually happen. The recent success of shows like Fallout and The Last of Us has really proven that video game adaptations can work on TV. Even something as wild as Twisted Metal managed to find an audience and get renewed! It’s a huge leap forward from the days of… well, the Far Cry movie, and all those other Uwe Boll disasters that gave video game movies such a bad name.
While Jeffrey Dean Morgan has expressed interest in playing Arthur Morgan, his age might be a factor. In Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur is 36, but Morgan is currently 59. He certainly has the tough personality the character requires, but he might be a better fit for Dutch van der Linde. His performance as Negan in The Walking Dead proves he can play a character who is both compelling and villainous – a quality that would suit Dutch very well.
Before even thinking about actors, a Red Dead Redemption movie would need to figure out the story. Should it begin with the first Red Dead game and then flash back to the events of the second, or tell the story in order? Despite these challenges, one actor has expressed interest and is reportedly affordable if the project moves forward with the right creative team.
