What to Expect From Dungeons and Dragons’ The Dragon Anthology

What to Expect From Dungeons and Dragons' The Dragon Anthology

As a seasoned Dungeons & Dragons player with over two decades of experience under my belt, let me tell you that 2024 has been a golden year for our beloved tabletop game! The collaboration with popular video games, the release of new rulebooks, and the upcoming Dragon Anthology have made this fantasy enthusiast’s heart skip a beat.

2024 marked a significant milestone for the beloved tabletop game, Dungeons & Dragons, as it celebrated its 40th anniversary. To honor this occasion, D&D partnered with renowned video games such as Destiny 2 and Dead by Daylight, expanded into a series of Lego-themed merchandise, and unveiled its Player’s Handbook – the initial installment in a series of rulebooks aimed at modernizing the game’s fifth edition

If you’re eager to test your freshly designed characters against the game’s legendary creatures, here’s some good news! Alongside the upcoming Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide, Wizards of the Coast unveiled details for their first adventure supplement in this series of revamped books. As yet unnamed, this supplement features a variety of adventures centered around the game’s famous monsters – dragons

New Dungeons for New Dragons

titled “The Dragon Anthology,” this upcoming publication is set to be the inaugural adventure supplement coming out next year. Not only will it introduce the new D&D rules for 2024, but it will also be the first supplement to do so. As described by D&D’s Senior Designer Amanda Hamon, “The Dragon Anthology” is a compilation of ten short adventures where dragons are found in dungeons. Despite potentially being perceived as basic by experienced Dungeon Masters and adventurers, James Wyatt, another Senior Designer for the game, explains that this focus on dragons is justified because “it’s quite astonishing how many people have never encountered a dragon in a D&D game.”

The Dragon Anthology Compared to Fifth Edition’s First Adventure Book

In a simplified and engaging manner: This revised version of D&D, modeled after 5E’s approaches, is treading in the footsteps of 5E. The initial of 5E’s experiences – the year 2014’s Hoard of the Dragon Queen – was handled cautiously by focusing on dragons and maintaining a strong adherence to elements typical of fantasy genre. Nevertheless, the two books will exhibit significant differences in the content they present

As a gamer, I was presented with an epic journey known as the “Hoard of the Dragon Queen.” This campaign aimed to stop the cult of the Dragon from resurrecting the draconic deity, Tiamat. The initial module even had a direct sequel titled “The Rise of Tiamat,” allowing players to continue expanding their storyline and deepening their connection to the narrative. A new anthology called “The Dragon Chronicles” will further streamline the gaming experience by providing standalone adventures that can be seamlessly integrated into larger campaigns or enjoyed independently

Predictions for the Dragon Anthology’s Adventures

The “Dragon Anthology” has not disclosed specific details about its adventures yet, but it is expected to include stories reminiscent of many anthology books published under D&D’s old rules. Examples include “Ghosts of Saltmarsh,” “Candlekeep Mysteries,” and the recent “Quests from the Infinite Staircase.” These supplements usually contain adventures with themes that are connected yet have unique plots. Each adventure is also designed for players at a particular level, meaning the difficulty increases as the DM progresses through the book. Given Wizards of the Coast’s history with other releases, the “Dragon Anthology” will likely follow a similar structure to other 5E books

In a captivating and easily comprehensible manner, let us delve into the enchanting world of Dragon Age, D&D’s ten dragon types, and their corresponding adventures within the Dragon Anthology

When to Play the Dragon Anthology

Titled as “The Dragon Anthology“, this intriguing publication is scheduled to debut in the balmy summer of 2025. Nestled comfortably between the February 18, 2025 launch of the Monster Manual, and the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons Starter Set slated for the fall of the subsequent year, this book will be accessible in both physical and digital formats through D&D Beyond
