Have you ever played a game so good that it felt like everything else would fall short? Recent titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Hollow Knight: Silksong are all examples of really well-made games. But do these games have a unique element – like interesting combat – that makes them especially appealing to players?
Whether a game features fast-paced action, strategic turn-based battles, or something else entirely, some players are looking for truly innovative combat. They want a system so impressive that anything less will feel disappointing. Here are some games that deliver that level of quality in their combat.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Mask Of The Ninja
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, created by FromSoftware, is a difficult game similar to the ‘Souls’ series, but with its own unique style. Instead of dodging and blocking, it focuses on aggressive combat, requiring players to study enemies and precisely counter their attacks to deal significant damage.
The combat system requires players to learn ninja techniques, and it can be challenging at first. However, once you get the hang of using both the sword and Wolf’s arm-mounted gadgets, it feels smooth and rewarding, while also effectively punishing mistakes.
Devil May Cry 5
Grappling With Demons
One of the best features of Devil May Cry 5 is its rotating cast of three main characters, each with a unique fighting style. This keeps the gameplay fresh and prevents any single character from overshadowing the others. While all three are great, Nero often feels like the central figure, wielding a sword, gun, and a powerful cybernetic arm for pulling enemies in.
V prefers to let his companion deal with enemies before jumping into the fight, while Dante uses incredibly powerful weapons, even a motorcycle! The Devil May Cry series is known for its amazing action, and this new game continues that tradition.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Here’s Web In Your Eye
In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, players can control either Peter Parker or Miles Morales, both of whom swing through the city, glide, and react quickly in combat. While they share many abilities, Peter relies more on gadgets, and Miles has unique electric-based powers.
Controlling Peter Parker when he transforms into Venom Spider-Man is the most enjoyable part of the combat. Syncing with Venom and wearing the black suit dramatically boosts his abilities, giving him more powerful attacks and the ability to use tentacle-like whips. This enhanced combat system is what truly sets this game apart from the previous two Insomniac Spider-Man titles.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Use The Force, Cal
In the last game, Cal was just learning the ropes, but now, in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, he’s a fully trained Jedi Knight determined to make a difference in the galaxy. He’s capable of taking on any challenge – whether it’s battling droids or Stormtroopers – and his lightsaber skills are incredibly sharp.
Combat feels different depending on your chosen fighting style and how you use the Force. The system is improved from the original game, offering more spectacular moves that let you feel like you’re in a Star Wars film.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Midgar Might
Okay, so I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and honestly, it’s a huge step up from Remake. It’s easily the best action RPG in the whole Final Fantasy series I’ve ever played – the combat feels amazing, the world is incredible, and it just blows everything else out of the water.
Each character feels distinct in combat. Cloud attacks with heavy sword strikes, Barret uses a long-range arm cannon, and Tifa delivers quick, powerful melee attacks. Beyond these basics, characters also have unique abilities and can learn magic through Materia. A particularly cool addition is the Synergy attack system, letting two characters combine their powers – like Tifa leaping off Cloud’s sword for an aerial boost.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Deal With These Attractions
Okay, so I’ve been playing Kingdom Hearts 3, and honestly, the combat is the best it’s ever been in the series. They didn’t just stick with the same old Keyblade attacks and magic. They added a couple of really cool new things that make battles way more engaging and fun!
Sora’s Keyblade can transform into different weapons, such as a gun or hammer, depending on the button combinations you use, and these transformations lead to powerful finishing moves. Plus, the game lets you summon classic Disney rides – like the teacups – in certain locations, letting you drive right through enemies. It’s a little goofy, but it’s a blast!
Chrono Trigger
Double And Triple Techs
Released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger remains impressive even today, especially its battle system. Characters learn skills and magic that can affect multiple enemies, such as Crono’s powerful Cyclone attack.
Getting the right positioning lets you hit multiple enemies, making battles more strategic. Characters can also combine attacks – for example, Lucca can add her Flamethrower to Crono’s Cyclone, creating a powerful Fire Whirl. Ultimately, Chrono Trigger remains a masterpiece of turn-based combat.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Parry And Counter
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based game with unique combat mechanics. Instead of standard attacks, each character operates under a different set of rules. For example, the character Lune builds up elemental charges with her attacks, which she can then spend to cast stronger spells.
While it’s enjoyable to learn each character in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, mastering the dodge and parry system is key to winning fights. Successfully timing your dodges and parries lets you deal significant damage, and once you understand enemy attack patterns, combat feels fast-paced and rhythmic, almost like playing a game such as WarioWare.
Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning
A Master Of Elements And Weapons
Despite having a fantastic combat system, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning didn’t achieve the same widespread popularity as The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
The game features responsive and satisfying combat, particularly with weapons like the chakrams. Seamlessly switching between weapons and abilities is a breeze. From firing poisoned arrows to unleashing earth-shattering attacks, the game’s smooth, fast-paced flow is its biggest strength.
Guacamelee
The People’s Elbow
While most Metroidvania games focus on sword fighting, magic, or shooting, Guacamelee is unique because it features wrestling moves. As you play, you’ll learn new combat techniques, like different types of grabs and powerful slams.
Players will be hooked on creating awesome attack chains against demonic skeletons, both to achieve high scores on their own and when playing with friends. It’s surprising how well this blend of wrestling and Metroidvania gameplay works!
