Okay, so you know John Romero, the legendary game designer? His new game looked like it was totally scrapped when Microsoft decided to stop publishing it and cut funding. But thankfully, it’s been rescued! It’s not exactly back on track as it was, but it’s happening, which is amazing news as a fan.
At the Madrid Video Game Show, the creator of DOOM announced that development on the game is still underway. He also shared an update on the game’s progress and what the team has been working on since the initial announcement in July.
So, I heard from Romero that the game’s been totally rebuilt, which is awesome! It’s got stuff from the original that I loved, but it’s definitely not just a rehash – it’s a completely new experience. He made it clear they weren’t starting completely from scratch, thankfully. They had a solid base to work with, which is good to hear!
He explained they’re able to repurpose elements from existing projects and incorporate them into a new independent game. They have plenty of content to work with, and while the game’s design has changed significantly, the team is enthusiastic about the direction it’s taking.
He explained that developing the game is now more enjoyable, even though it’s a simpler project overall.
He explained that the team is enjoying the project more because they’re finally able to use their core skills. Previously, they were in leadership roles and weren’t directly involved in the hands-on work like coding or design. Now, they’re getting to do what they excel at.
So, Romero didn’t really dive deep into the game’s features during his talk, but he did mention Elden Ring as a big inspiration. He loved how fresh and different Elden Ring felt, and that’s what he’s aiming for with his own game. He actually said he’s trying to create something he’s never even played before, and that’s the whole point – he wants to give players a truly unique experience.
