The Last of Us 3 May Have to Lurk in The Shadows Before Its Reveal

As a longtime gamer who’s been through the rollercoaster that is the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and trepidation regarding The Last of Us Part 3. After the tumultuous journey with The Last of Us Part 2, it seems Naughty Dog might be wise to keep their cards close to their chest this time around.

Following the cancellation of the live-service multiplayer spinoff for “The Last of Us,” which was announced last December, Naughty Dog provided an update on their official website, albeit vaguely explaining the reasons behind the cancelation. Towards the end of this blog post, Naughty Dog hinted that they have multiple ambitious, new single-player games in development, but there’s been no formal confirmation regarding the nature of these projects yet.

There’s been a lot of chatter suggesting that one of the current projects underway at Naughty Dog could be a fresh, potentially Sci-Fi storyline. However, details about the other projects remain vague. Given their past success with The Last of Us franchise, it seems likely that Naughty Dog will eventually revisit this series, especially if the HBO live-action adaptation maintains its high level of popularity. Yet, if history has taught us anything, it might take some time before fans can lay eyes on a potential The Last of Us Part 3, even if development has already begun.

The Last of Us Part 2 Suffered Some Extreme Pre-Release Leaks

Among the most notoriously leaked video games ever, “The Last of Us Part 2” experienced several significant data breaches prior to its official release in June 2020. The largest leak, arguably the biggest in gaming history, occurred in April 2020. A leaker obtained approximately an hour’s worth of gameplay and cutscene footage from “The Last of Us Part 2”, which was then shared publicly. This leak revealed key plot details that have since become iconic, such as Joel’s death at the hands of Abby in the opening act, Dina’s pregnancy, and Jesse’s eventual demise.

During the period prior to the launch of The Last of Us Part 2, leaks were almost inevitable, given their prevalence in news headlines and social media discussions. It’s clear that these leaks significantly impacted the initial response to the game, as many people based their opinions on the leaked content, deciding they didn’t approve of Naughty Dog’s creative direction for the series and forming lasting impressions about the game’s narrative before even playing the completed version. These early opinions were difficult to alter once set.

Regrettably, the extensive leaks associated with “The Last of Us Part 2” have become inextricably linked to its history. Even four years on, these leaks continue to play a significant role in discussions about “The Last of Us Part 2,” and the emotional turmoil they inflicted on Naughty Dog’s staff is an enduring memory.

The Last of Us Part 3 Should Remain in Stealth

As a passionate gamer, I firmly believe that if The Last of Us Part 3 ever goes into development, Sony should let Naughty Dog work on it in secrecy. Revealing the game only when it’s almost ready to hit the shelves seems like a wise move for several reasons.

To minimize the possibility of another major plot leak, it’s beneficial to maintain secrecy about The Last of Us Part 3 until its release. This mystery could create enough uncertainty that fans might more easily dismiss any leaked information. Unlike most games requiring extensive pre-release marketing, The Last of Us Part 3 may generate the same level of impact by simply surprising everyone with its sudden appearance.
