Games With Stealth Mechanics Better Than Any Modern Assassin’s Creed

The Assassin’s Creed series had a shaky start, but really took off with Assassin’s Creed 2, which focused on the character Ezio. The gameplay didn’t change much again until Assassin’s Creed 3 added sailing and naval battles. Then, Assassin’s Creed Origins further evolved the series by introducing role-playing game elements.

Ubisoft has steadily reduced stealth options with each new Assassin’s Creed game. It’s strange that a simple neck stab doesn’t guarantee an instant kill unless you adjust the game settings – that feels wrong for a stealth-focused game! So, if you’re a fan of stealth gameplay and want options that work well, you might find other games more satisfying, even if they aren’t necessarily better overall than recent Assassin’s Creed titles.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist

A Forgotten Reboot

Before the popular Assassin’s Creed series, Ubisoft was known for Splinter Cell. While the first three Splinter Cell games, like Chaos Theory, still offer excellent stealth gameplay, Splinter Cell: Blacklist is a more accessible entry point for new players. Blacklist introduces a unique system where you earn money during missions to upgrade your personal airplane and unlock new tools and equipment for Sam Fisher.

The game features lots of interesting gadgets, and the sticky cameras are particularly useful. You can use them to scout ahead or even knock out enemies with sleep gas. But the coolest feature is definitely the ‘Execute’ function – it instantly eliminates all enemies you’ve marked, just like in the movie John Wick, and without raising any alarms.

Hitman: World Of Assassination

Hitman: World of Assassination brings together all the missions from the recent Hitman trilogy into a single, streamlined experience. The Hitman series is known for giving players a lot of freedom as Agent 47. You can approach missions stealthily, eliminating targets with tools like wire or firearms, and then concealing the bodies. However, the real fun comes from adopting disguises and blending into the environment.

Agent 47 is a master of disguise, able to convincingly pose as a wide variety of people – from police officers and servers to performers and racers. He uses these disguises to infiltrate secure locations and get close to his targets. The game offers helpful dialogue choices to make his cover believable, and its stealth mechanics are incredibly detailed – truly setting Hitman apart from other games in the genre.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

For me, the Metal Gear series is the king of stealth games. What I love is that every game gives you tons of options for dealing with guards – you can distract them, sneak right past, or, well, take them out. The latest one, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, takes it even further. I can actually recruit soldiers and have them help me build and test out new weapons and gear in the field, which is awesome!

You have lots of options for taking down enemies without killing them. Once incapacitated, you can send them back to Mother Base using a tactical balloon. The game offers a wide range of gadgets for stealth, like hiding in boxes, using decoy cardboard models, and throwing smoke grenades – it really emphasizes creative, non-lethal approaches.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Build Your Character

Deus Ex: Human Revolution lets you customize your main character, Adam Jensen, to fit your playstyle. Because he has a robotic body, you can improve his skills in areas like stealth or hacking, allowing you to complete missions without fighting, bypass security systems, or become a powerful combatant.

Recent Assassin’s Creed games include skill trees, but they don’t offer the same level of customization as the cybernetic enhancements in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. This is a key reason why Deus Ex games are so popular – they let players approach challenges and shape their characters in a way that suits their individual play style.

In Dishonored 2, players can choose to play the game as either Corvo, the protagonist from the first game, or as Emily. Each character has unique magical abilities, encouraging players to experience the story from both perspectives, even though the overall plot remains consistent.

Corvo has powers like slowing time, summoning rats, and even taking control of enemies – all incredibly useful for sneaking around. Emily isn’t lacking either, as she can create a distraction with a clone of herself, or temporarily stun her opponents.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

In The Shadows

Unlike later games in the Arkham series, Batman: Arkham Asylum really focuses on stealth. It highlights both how powerful Batman is and how he can be overwhelmed if he tries to fight armed enemies directly. Instead of brute force, players have to rely on sneaking around, using shadows, and attacking from above.

Batman uses the environment to his advantage in fights. He can quickly move through the shadows, appearing from above or below to surprise and subdue opponents. His ability to scan and assess situations is similar to the Eagle Vision in the Assassin’s Creed games, but Batman goes further by using his observations to plan the most effective course of action.

Sniper Elite: Resistance

Unlike the Assassin’s Creed series, Sniper Elite: Resistance – and the other Sniper Elite games – focuses on gunplay. This newest installment, set during World War II, gives players open areas to explore in each mission. They’ll have main objectives to accomplish, as well as optional side missions that can provide helpful benefits.

The game allows for flexible mission approaches, but it’s known for its realistic and violent gunplay – bullets realistically penetrate bodies. Because of this, focusing on ‘bullets’ as a solution makes sense. With a variety of tools at their disposal, including swords, bows, and unique steampunk devices like a camera orb, players can approach challenges in Thief 2: The Metal Age through stealth or direct assassination.

Tenchu 2: Birth Of The Stealth Assassins

Don’t Forget The PS1

I recently revisited Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins – it originally came out for the PS1 way back in 2000! And honestly, even after almost thirty years, the stealth gameplay still holds up, kind of like Thief 2. Before each mission, I get to pick my gear – everything from health packs to traps. Then it’s all about sneaking around these relatively small levels, hunting for my target. The game really lets you get creative with how you approach things. I love using rooftops to quickly move around, laying down caltrops to slow enemies down, or even poisoning food to quietly take out guards. It’s a really satisfying stealth experience.

As a fan, I’d say it plays a bit like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but it really stands out because of how many different gadgets and tools you get to use. Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins is all about being a true ninja – sneaking around is way more important than fighting, and that’s what makes it so special.
