Usually, Epic releases free games at 8am PT / 11am ET, but this giveaway launched around 6:20pm PT / 9:20pm ET. The only connection between Hogwarts Legacy and The Game Awards 2023 was a short trailer promoting the free game and Epic’s broader holiday trailer, which played about two hours into the event.

Information discovered by Game Rant indicates that Epic is calling the first free game “Mystery Game 1” (likely Hogwarts Legacy) and the December 18th game “Mystery Game 2.” However, because Hogwarts Legacy is free for a full week instead of just 24 hours, it doesn’t seem to be part of the traditional 12 Days of Christmas giveaway, despite being offered around the same time.

On December 11th, Epic Games is giving away a free item shortly after kicking off its annual Holiday Sale, which features discounts of up to 75% on many PC games. They’ve also increased the benefits of their Epic Rewards program, now offering 20% cashback on purchases made through Epic’s payment system. This higher cashback rate lasts throughout the sale, which ends on January 8th, for all games except Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League – those games will permanently receive the 20% cashback. Throughout the sale, players can also find other free items like cosmetic upgrades, in-game currency, and free trials, including a Hollypaw Wrap for Fortnite, a Fashionably Frosty cosmetic for Fall Guys, and TriTrim Crimson & Forest Green Wheels for Rocket League.
