2 New Tomb Raider Games Revealed

I was so excited to watch The Game Awards 2025, and Crystal Dynamics didn’t disappoint! They announced two new Tomb Raider games: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Legacy of Atlantis looks like they’re revisiting the very beginning, a full remake of Lara Croft’s original adventure, while Catalyst seems like a completely new chapter in the series – I can’t wait to learn more!

Crystal Dynamics revealed in April 2022 that they were developing a new Tomb Raider game with Unreal Engine 5. Amazon Games signed on to publish the game in December 2022, but there haven’t been any updates—aside from one initial piece of concept art—in the three years since.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst Officially Revealed

At The Game Awards 2025, two new Tomb Raider games were revealed: Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Catalyst is a completely new game in the series, which fans had been calling Tomb Raider 12. Legacy of Atlantis is a remake of the original Tomb Raider from 1996, following Lara Croft on a worldwide journey to find a lost artifact known as the Scion of Atlantis.

Everything Confirmed About Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

The recent trailer for Legacy of Atlantis, shown at TGA 2025, revealed Lara Croft’s updated appearance, which Crystal Dynamics first hinted at earlier in 2024 through a puzzle on their website. Lara now has a teal shirt and a single, long braid—a nod to her classic look—along with a redesigned face. The trailer shows her using two handguns, similar to the ones from the original 1996 Tomb Raider game. It also suggests Legacy of Atlantis won’t be a direct remake, as it features a grapple hook—a tool that wasn’t in the original but was added in the 2007 game Tomb Raider: Anniversary. A quick glimpse of a massive dinosaur seems to tease the famous T-Rex battle from the first game’s halfway point.

Legacy of Atlantis Is the 5th Version of Tomb Raider 1

As a long-time fan, I’m so excited for Legacy of Atlantis! It’s incredible to think this is the fifth major release of the original Tomb Raider game from 1996. I remember playing Tomb Raider Gold (or Unfinished Business as some called it) back in ’98 – that expansion with the extra levels was awesome. Then Crystal Dynamics gave us Tomb Raider: Anniversary in 2007, which was a fantastic reimagining. And just last year, in February 2024, Aspyr released the Tomb Raider 1–3 Remastered collection, which everyone loved. Now, with Legacy of Atlantis, it feels like the classic game is getting a whole new life!

A new Tomb Raider game, titled Legacy of Atlantis, is currently being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It was originally announced with a planned release in 2026, and it now seems likely the game will launch in the latter half of the year.

Everything Confirmed About Tomb Raider: Catalyst

The next installment in the Tomb Raider series, Catalyst, will follow Lara Croft on a new adventure triggered by an ancient disaster that has awakened dangerous protectors and long-lost secrets. The story hints at time travel playing a role, though how much it will affect the gameplay is still unknown. Lara will face off against rival treasure hunters as she explores locations across Northern India. While it may not have the same global scope as Legacy of Atlantis, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (currently confirmed for Steam) in 2027.

Besides the games Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst, a live-action Tomb Raider TV series starring Lara Croft has been in the works at Amazon for several years. However, progress has been slow, and reports from March 2025 indicated the script wasn’t even finished yet.
