Recently, some McDonald’s fans have noticed the restaurant is posting about video games, which seemed a little unusual. These posts are likely connected to The Game Awards, an annual event celebrating the best video games and the people who make them. While other award shows recognize the gaming industry, The Game Awards is one of the most prominent.
At The Game Awards, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the biggest winner, taking home nine awards. The game was nominated for twelve awards total, including three for Best Performance. Sandfall Interactive’s first game also won the prestigious Game of the Year award. Other games competing for that top prize were Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hades 2, and Death Stranding 2. Beyond recognizing the best games of 2025, the event featured many trailers, announcements, and looks at upcoming games.
McDonald’s Celebrates The Game Awards in a Unique Way
McDonald’s surprised everyone on December 11th by starting to tweet about video games. They began posting pictures of game characters alongside a McDonald’s bag and a receipt showing what the character had ordered. The first post featured Naked Snake from Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and his order was simply a plain bagel and ketchup. It’s been amusing to see what different game characters might choose from the McDonald’s menu. This quickly expanded to include posts about games like The Witcher 3, Dispatch, World of Warcraft, Nier Automata, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and many others. People soon started wondering why the McDonald’s Twitter account was suddenly focused on gaming, though it did reveal that characters from The Witcher might enjoy a blue raspberry Frozen Fanta now and then.
The sudden surge of McDonald’s-related game posts seemed strange to some, but others realized it coincided with The Game Awards on December 11th. While the posts weren’t only about 2025 games, many featured recent titles like Death Stranding 2, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Ghost of Yotei, and Silent Hill f. McDonald’s officially acknowledged the event by tweeting congratulations to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for winning Game of the Year. In that same post, they shared that Esquie had ordered a French vanilla latte, a big breakfast with hotcakes, and hash browns. As of now, the posts appear to be finished, with the final one showcasing the characters Verso and Renoir from Expedition 33.
McDonald’s wasn’t the only non-gaming brand to celebrate the win of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Major League Baseball also chimed in, posting a picture of a player wearing the number 33 and referencing a popular quote from the game about preparing for future success. It was a bit surprising to see sports teams and fast food companies tweeting about a video game, but many fans appreciated the positive energy and excitement surrounding The Game Awards.
