As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the RPG genre has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Games like Star Wars Outlaws, with its unique approach to character builds, have certainly caught my attention and made me reflect on how these mechanics could be applied in other games, particularly the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake.
Drawing heavy influence from traditional board games such as Dungeons and Dragons, early role-playing game (RPG) titles frequently adopted their gameplay elements and structures quite directly. A defining characteristic of classic tabletop RPGs that has endured in nearly every modern RPG is the notion of character classes or builds. In most contemporary RPGs, players are initially offered a selection of character types to pick from, each providing the character with a unique set of abilities right from the start. However, in RPG-lite games like Star Wars Outlaws, the concept of builds operates slightly differently.
Essentially, Star Wars Outlaws is an action-adventure game that doesn’t offer a multitude of weapon, armor, or statistical options for players to alter gameplay significantly. Instead, it empowers players to craft their own experience by selecting which skills they want to enhance initially. While it may not provide the freedom found in conventional RPGs, there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be derived from Star Wars Outlaws’ rogue-like playstyle. Additionally, it might impart valuable insights for the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake.
Star Wars Outlaws Should Inspire Knights of the Old Republic Remake’s Scoundrel Class
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Scoundrel Class Needs Some Work
2003’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic introduces players with three unique character classes at its outset: Scout, Soldier, and Scoundrel. The Scoundrel is presented as a cunning rogue relying on “subterfuge and agility,” which seems appealing, however, the gameplay mechanics often fail to deliver this experience.
In the game “Knights of the Old Republic,” the Scoundrel character has a unique starting build that is heavily focused on stealth. Since the Scoundrel’s health pool is smaller and they can’t wear heavy armor, players are encouraged to utilize a cloaking device at the beginning or just before a fight, set traps, and position themselves behind enemies to take advantage of their powerful sneak attack.
From my perspective as a lover of stealth games, the playstyle of Knights of the Old Republic seems tailored for me, but in practice, I found its stealth mechanics rather basic. My character’s movement speed is quite slow, making it a bit tedious to set traps and find optimal positions within the arena. Moreover, frequent combat in KOTOR can make these stealth sequences feel repetitive and frustrating rather than engaging.
How Star Wars Outlaws Could Inspire KOTOR Remake’s Scoundrel
Despite uncertainty about its final development stage, the “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake” is still scheduled to be released, and it would be fantastic if it brings some significant enhancements to the Scoundrel starting build. Meanwhile, although the recently launched “Star Wars Outlaws” isn’t flawless, aspects of its scoundrel-focused gameplay could serve as a blueprint for an upgraded Scoundrel class in the “KOTOR Remake”.
A significant aspect of the gameplay in “Star Wars Outlaws” involves stealth, and certain aspects could effectively enhance the gameplay of the “KOTOR Remake“. To enrich the user experience, an upgrade in movement speed is recommended, along with providing multiple routes within the environment to bypass enemy patrols. This would make the Scoundrel class in “KOTOR Remake” more unique. Additionally, incorporating the scoundrel’s ability to postpone detection by attempting to peacefully resolve combat situations through dialogue would significantly boost the role-playing gameplay of “KOTOR“.
