How LEGO Horizon Adventures Helps Push LEGO Games Into Uncharted Territory

As a longtime LEGO enthusiast who has spent countless hours constructing and re-imagining iconic worlds, I must admit that the upcoming release of LEGO Horizon Adventures has left me quite intrigued. The visual fidelity of this game is truly astounding, but it’s the departure from traditional LEGO game mechanics that really sets it apart.

The graphical quality of the upcoming “LEGO Horizon Adventures” is hardly matched by other LEGO games. Yet, what sets it apart visually is its ability to handle more complex visual tasks than most other titles in the series, making “LEGO Horizon Adventures” a real game-changer.

If the leaks on the PlayStation store are accurate, it appears that LEGO Horizon Adventures could be released on November 14th. Given that The LEGO Group has shifted away from Traveller’s Tales, who developed all major LEGO games from 2005 to 2022, towards new projects like 2K Drive! and LEGO Fortnite following the end of their exclusivity agreement, it’s not surprising that Aloy’s brick-based adventure is also changing studios. The upcoming game is being developed by Studio Gobo and Guerrilla Games, who were responsible for the previous Horizon games.

LEGO Horizon Adventures Is Straying Further From LEGO’s Toys Than Ever Before

It’s well-known that LEGO games serve as marketing tools for their toys, and many of these games are highly regarded in their own right. However, if LEGO doesn’t have any more Horizon sets in the pipeline, this title appears to be underperforming compared to other LEGO games. So far, only one set has been released for the series, and it’s already two years old. LEGO Horizon Adventures seems to be an attempt to incorporate the appeal of the toyline into Horizon, rather than a collaborative project – which could signal a change in their approach.

LEGO Games Almost Always Center On Current Toys

Undeniably, the most memorable LEGO games are those created by Traveller’s Tales, renowned for their ability to complement existing content, although they fall short compared to the innovative approach of LEGO Horizon Adventures. The LEGO Batman series serves as a compelling illustration of this trait. In the initial game, the primary focus is on characters and vehicles that LEGO had previously launched, with exceptions such as Man-Bat, Killer Moth, and Clayface making rare appearances.

In the second installment of the series, it was launched concurrently with the revamped DC Superheroes collection from 2012. The primary narrative zeroed in on characters introduced during that phase; however, characters such as The Flash required customization by Traveller’s Tales, much like other figures without minifigure counterparts, including villains like Mr. Freeze and Killer Croc, whose designs were borrowed from the pre-reboot sets spanning 2006 to 2008. The third game, titled “DC Supervillains,” showcased even more innovative designs but managed to connect well with existing sets and figures.

The standout game bucking this general trend (with titles like LEGO The Incredibles nudging it somewhat) is LEGO Dimensions, a toys-to-life game. While the game showcased numerous IPs commonly associated with LEGO, series such as E.T., Gremlins, and Goonies never had official LEGO sets. However, the toys-to-life feature meant that Dimensions continued to sell toys, particularly among collectors who were keen on minifigures of characters like Gizmo or Beetlejuice.

For the game LEGO Horizon Adventures, there is just one available model to draw inspiration from. In the year 2022, LEGO introduced a Tallneck model with an Aloy minifigure, as part of their Icons theme – a series of display sets intended for older enthusiasts. This set has been discontinued, suggesting that the game may not be influenced by toy-related partnerships.

LEGO Has Proven Its Standalone Charm

As a die-hard gamer, I can say that the solo essence of LEGO Horizon Adventures truly speaks volumes about the LEGO brand. While other LEGO games were initially designed to move toys off shelves, their hilarious humor, engaging gameplay, and captivating narratives have earned them legendary status among fans globally. Now, infusing LEGO into a game or movie is no mere brand extension; it’s an undeniable recipe for creating an imaginative spin-off brimming with creativity and an enchanting allure.
