Key Takeaways

  • Many
    One Piece
characters are teased to be important in the future and still have yet to properly meet its main character, Monkey D. Luffy.
  • Urouge from the Worst Generation is a still fairly unknown character with a mysterious Devil Fruit power.
  • Edward Weevil claims to be Whitebeard’s son, but his true parentage is uncertain.

As a longtime fan of One Piece, I find myself captivated by the intriguing characters that grace its pages and screens. Among these, two figures stand out as particularly fascinating: Garling, the stern World Noble, and Monkey D. Dragon, the enigmatic leader of the Revolutionary Army and Luffy’s father.

In the popular series “One Piece,” Monkey D. Luffy takes center stage as the protagonist. His role is pivotal, and the importance of other characters often depends on their relationship with him. However, there are certain characters hinted to be significant who have yet to cross paths or engage in meaningful interactions with the Straw Hat crew.

Oda often introduces characters and then delves into their backstories later in the series, like Donquixote Doflamingo who wasn’t fully revealed as a main adversary to Luffy until several story arcs had passed. Although it’s likely that many of these characters will eventually interact with Luffy, for now, this is just speculation based on their significant roles in the story.

5 Urouge

Captain of the Fallen Monk Pirates

One Piece Characters Who Have Not Met Luffy
  • Debut: Chapter 498 (Manga), Episode 392 (Anime)

This mysterious pirate, belonging to the infamous “Worst Generation,” originates from the floating archipelago known as the Sky Islands. He is almost always seen with a broad grin on his face, even in life-threatening situations. The identity and abilities of his Devil Fruit remain undisclosed. It’s been observed that any harm inflicted upon him gets transformed into muscle growth, but the specifics of its power are still unclear. Similar to Bonney, there may be more to this Worst Generation member and his Devil Fruit than what has been suggested to the audience so far.

The Mad Monk stands out among the Worst Generation characters, who are already somewhat enigmatic to fans, due to his lack of direct involvement in Luffy’s storyline so far. This absence is particularly noticeable given that all other members of the Worst Generation have had some form of interaction with Luffy. The Mad Monk’s character might provide an interesting twist, as he seems to share some similarities with Ji Gong, a renowned Chinese Buddhist monk known for his rule-breaking but also his aid to the common people. Given Luffy’s own reputation for challenging norms and helping others, it’s plausible that he and Urouge (the Mad Monk) could form a unique bond if they ever cross paths.

4 Edward Weevil

Whitebeard’s ‘Son’

  • Debut: Chapter 802 (Manga), Episode 751 (Anime)

Edward Weevil joined the Seven Warlords of the Sea quite late in their history. Among the five pirates who remained with the organization after its disbandment, he was unique because he didn’t have his own crew. Interestingly, it is believed that he might be the son of Edward Newgate, although this isn’t definitively proven. Buckingham Stussy, who was previously associated with Whitebeard when they were both members of the Rocks Pirates, claimed that the two had a romantic past. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his parentage, Weevil’s physical power is often compared to Newgate at the height of his strength.

The claim of Weevil being Whitebeard’s son seemed spurious to many, as the late Emperor often stated that his crew, the Whitebeard Pirates, were his family. Nonetheless, Buckin manipulated her son to seek out Whitebeard’s “fortune”, which involved taking out any member or affiliate of his expansive crew. Unfortunately, due to most of the money Whitebeard acquired going to humanitarian aid for Sphinx, the island he grew up on, there was no such fortune to speak of. Weevil was eventually apprehended due to the extent of his destruction, which led Buckin to seek out Marco’s aid to rescue her son.

It’s uncertain whether either member of this pair will ever encounter Luffy, but it’s interesting to note that every other Warlord in the story has met him so far. Luffy is linked to the Whitebeard Pirates indirectly since his sworn brother Ace was one of Whitebeard’s “sons.” At the time of Whitebeard’s death, Luffy was an ally of the Whitebeard Pirates and worked with several former crew members after that event. By chance, Buckin is voiced by Erica Schroeder, who provided Luffy’s voice in the temporary 4Kids dub of One Piece.

3 Aramaki

Ryokugyu, The Greenest Marine Admiral

  • Debut: Chapter 905 (Manga), Episode 882 (Anime)

Among the two newly appointed marine admirals, Aramaki stepped in to replace Sakazuki’s promotion and Kuzan’s absence. He possesses expertise in Haki and has consumed a Devil Fruit – the Mori Mori no Mi, which allows him to create lethal vegetation. Compared to his fellow admirals, Aramaki stands out in his unwavering reverence towards the World Nobles, viewing them as divine beings. Notably, he engaged in combat with Fujitora, another recent marine admiral, when Fujitora attempted to liberate the slaves of the World Nobles following the invasion of Mary Geoise by the revolutionaries.

Following Bartholomew Kuma’s rescue, Admiral Aramaki journeyed to Wano, swiftly eliminating the last remnants of the Beasts Pirates and engaging in combat with the Kozuki clan’s warriors post-Raid on Onigashima. His objective was to eliminate Luffy, but Shanks intervened from afar, using his Haki to communicate a warning for Aramaki to stay away from the new generation of pirates. To avoid escalating the conflict, Aramaki departed. Additionally, he was instrumental in capturing Edward Weevil once the Marines requested backup to subdue the pirate. It’s evident that this Admiral is both an accomplished fighter and loyal to the World Nobles. As Luffy continues to provoke them during the final saga, the possibility of Aramaki engaging with him becomes more imminent.

2 Figarland Garling

Supreme Commander of God’s Knights

One Piece Characters Who Have Not Met Luffy
  • Debut: Chapter 1086 (Manga), Episode TBD (Anime)

In the initial sighting, the World Noble known as Garling was observed executing Donquixote Mjosgard, a fellow World Noble who refused to be called a god and sought equality. This act came about when Mjosgard defended Shirahoshi, a mermaid princess, from enslavement by another World Noble named Charlos. To accomplish this, Mjosgard attacked Charlos, giving Leo, Sai – two new pirate captains loyal to Luffy – the chance to join in the assault on him as well. Garling holds the conviction that those who protect “worthless” beings are no better than they are themselves. Additionally, he is believed to have been a champion at God Valley in the past, suggesting he might have battled numerous powerful pirates during the God Valley Incident. There are also theories suggesting some connection between him and Shanks, with many assuming they could be father and son.

Garling’s execution shows he holds a level of authority over World Nobles, characters who were previously shown to be otherwise untouchable by the law. Garling leads God’s Knights, who essentially operate as the law enforcement group within the Holy Land of Mary Geoise. Seeing preventing enslavement was the first on-screen action they deemed worthy of punishing a World Noble over, it shows a systemic angle from which the excess and corruption of World Nobles persist. With the recent death of Saturn, it is Garling who steps up to join the Five Elders, granting him potentially even more power. It is not clear at all if Garling will face Luffy, as he is hinted to be a more direct foe to the revolutionaries. However, due to the pirate’s own crimes of helping people and curtailing government corruption, the two will likely not get along if they ever do meet.

1 Monkey D. Dragon

Revolutionary Army Leader and also Luffy’s Father

One Piece Characters Who Have Not Met Luffy
  • Debut: Chapter 100 (Manga), Episode 52 (Anime)

Throughout the series, Dragon has often been a subject of jest, yet he’s maintained a mysterious distance from Luffy. Reminiscent of his father, Monkey D. Garp, who was once a marine, Dragon chose to leave due to differing opinions about justice within the organization. He then amassed an army with the aim of toppling the government. At different stages of Luffy’s life, various associates of Dragon have extended assistance when their interests coincided. These include high-ranking revolutionaries like Kuma, Ivankov, and Sabo. Nevertheless, the extent of Dragon’s involvement in his son’s adventures remains uncertain, especially considering his label as the “World’s Worst Criminal.

There’s been talk among fans that Dragon may have orchestrated the mysterious lightning bolt that spared Luffy from execution at Loguetown. More specifically, it’s believed he intervened to stop Smoker from arresting Luffy there. Furthermore, it seems he maintains some form of contact with Garp, despite their conflicting allegiances. Interestingly, Luffy himself is unaware of his father’s existence until Garp reveals it. Their relationship was largely kept secret until the Summit War. Dragon felt a sense of relief upon this revelation, suggesting that even within the Revolutionaries, he carries an air of mystery. As a significant confrontation with the World Government approaches, it’s expected that Dragon will become more openly supportive of Luffy. However, the exact timing of this event remains uncertain.
