Pokemon Legends: Z-A DLC officially dethrones the strongest Pokemon trainer in the series after 19 years

Spoilers for Pokemon Legends: Z-A and the Mega Dimension DLC ahead.

The recently released Mega Dimension DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is already making a big impact! It adds 19 new Mega Evolutions and brings back many classic moves as Technical Machines (TMs). You can get these new moves by trading Mega Shards with a special NPC in the game, and they’re useful for completing both the main Pokedex and the Hyperspace Lumiose Pokedex. Some Pokemon get significant improvements – for example, Leafeon becomes much stronger with Solar Blade, and Skarmory gains a powerful new attack with Magnet Bomb. On top of all that, the DLC includes a new trainer battle that’s officially the most challenging in the entire Pokemon series, surpassing even a famously difficult trainer from nearly two decades ago.

When it comes to the anime, many fans consider Ash to be the most skilled Pokémon Trainer, having finally achieved his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master by winning a major tournament against strong opponents like Leon, Diantha, and Cynthia. But before the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the video games always featured one trainer widely considered the strongest: the original Cynthia, who served as Champion in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Over the years, other trainers have held that title, and they include:

  • Whitney (Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal): Whitney’s Miltank is one of the hardest Pokemon to beat in the series for inexperienced players, and it likely did some real damage to you, too, back in the day. This is hardly the most challenging fight in the series, but it’s quite difficult for its intended level.
  • Red (Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal): The legendary Pokemon trainer, Red, was fought at the top of Mt Silver and used a team of high-level critters, including the three Kanto starters, Pikachu, Snorlax, and Espeon. Despite the high-level team, Red is not too hard to beat, as the game favors certain strategies and moves over others.
  • Volo (Pokemon Legends: Arceus): Though PLA‘s Volo is technically harder to beat than Cynthia, thanks to his powerful team of six high-level Pokemon, he is a lone trainer. Yes, he packs a punch and makes things extremely hard with a seventh Pokemon on his team, Giratina, who also has a second form after being defeated, but Cynthia was the final battle after the Elite Four.

The new DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A features what many players consider the most difficult battle in the series. You’ll face Taunie or Urbain, trainers with six incredibly powerful Pokemon, all at level 100. Four of their Pokemon can Mega Evolve, and the remaining two are heavily equipped with powerful moves and items. You need to finish the main game before you can even attempt this battle, reinforcing the idea that it’s designed as the ultimate test of skill.

It’s Time to Welcome The Hardest Trainer in Pokemon Games

How Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s DLC Taunie and Urbain Battle Beats Cynthia

Although the story in Pokemon Legends: Z-A isn’t overly challenging, completing the game requires overcoming some tough battles. The fights against Taunie or Urbain near the end can be tricky, the boss battle with Ange takes patience and skill, and defeating Taunie or Urbain after surviving 15 rounds of the Infinite Z-A Royale is only manageable with perfectly optimized teams.

However, the Mega Dimension DLC introduces a particularly challenging fight for Taunie and Urbain – arguably the most difficult in the entire game, considering their team composition. Here’s what it includes:

  • Mega Meowstic (Lv. 100) – Item: Meowsticite
    • Moves: Light Screen, Reflect, Psychic, Wish
  • Goodra (Lv. 100) – Item: Assault Vest
    • Moves: Surf, Acid Spray, Draco Meteor, Blizzard
  • Avalugg (Lv. 100) – Item: Leftovers
    • Moves: Icicle Crash, Icicle Spear, Stone Edge, Protect
  • Mega Manectric (Lv. 100) – Item: Manectite
    • Moves: Snarl, Thunder, Overheat, Protect
  • Mega Meganium (Lv. 100) – Item: Meganiumite
    • Moves: Frenzy Plant, Earth Power, Dazzling Gleam, Giga Drain
  • Mega Feraligatr (Lv. 100) – Item: Feraligite
    • Moves: Outrage, Liquidation, Swords Dance, Earthquake
  • Mega Emboar (Lv. 100) – Item: Emboarite
    • Moves: Flare Blitz, Stone Edge, Close Combat, Bulk Up

Although all three Mega Evolutions of the starter Pokemon are available in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the trainer Taunie or Urbain will only use two during battle. They’ll save the Mega Evolution that’s strongest against your chosen starter for their final Pokemon.

Okay, so if you want to face Taunie or Urbain’s ultimate team – seriously, they’re tough! – you gotta grind through all the Side Missions, all 199 of them. Completing those unlocks a mission called “Here in Lumiose City” where you help them out. And heads up, they’re the only trainer in the whole game with a full team of Pokémon at level 100, so it’s a real challenge!

Cynthia’s Team in Pokemon Gen 4 Explained

Okay, so when I finally got to Cynthia in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, I was expecting a total wipeout, but honestly? Her team wasn’t as overwhelmingly strong as everyone made it out to be. But, and this is a big but, it was really well-built for the level she throws at you. It’s like she knew exactly what she was doing! Here’s what she’s got:

  • Spiritomb – Lv. 61
  • Roserade – Lv. 60
  • Gastrodon – Lv. 60
  • Lucario – Lv. 63
  • Milotic – Lv. 63
  • Garchomp – Lv. 66

It’s worth noting that Fairy-type Pokemon didn’t exist in Gen 4, so Spiritomb had no weaknesses.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Second-Hardest DLC Battle is Not As Bad As it Looks

Building a team of six Pokémon all at level 100 is incredibly difficult, but facing Taunie/Urbain is even harder because they can Mega Evolve four Pokémon during one battle. This is a rare ability, only matched by Korrina, who may become a rival in the Infinite Z-A Royale after she catches Rayquaza in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Korrina uses six Pokemon, but they are not max level, and range from level 95 to 100. These are:

  • Mega Gallade (Lv. 95) – Item: Galladite
    • Moves: Sacred Sword, Close Combat, Bulk Up, Psycho Cut
  • Mega Crabominable (Lv. 95) – Item: Crabominite
    • Moves: Ice Hammer, Iron Defense, Dynamic Punch, Mach Punch
  • Mega Medicham (Lv. 97) – Item: Medichamite
    • Moves: Zen Headbutt, Dynamic Punch, Ice Punch, Recover
  • Mega Hawlucha (Lv. 99) – Item: Hawluchanite
    • Moves: Flying Press, Swords Dance, Feather Dance, Brave Bird
  • Mega Chesnaught (Lv. 99) – Item: Chesnaughtite
    • Moves: Spiky Shield, Close Combat, Wood Hammer, Stone Edge
  • Mega Lucario Z (Lv. 100) – Item: Lucarionite Z
    • Moves: Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, Detect, Flash Cannon

This battle might actually be more challenging than the one against Taunie and Urbain, but there are two important things to keep in mind.

  • Korrina’s Pokemon are not level 100 except for Lucario Z, and since Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Hyperspace Lumiose zones require level 100 Pokemon to tackle the DLC content efficiently, players will inevitably have a full team of level 100 critters.
  • Korrina specializes in Fighting-type Pokemon, meaning that a mix of Psychic, Flying, and Fairy critters will easily secure the win.

Korrina’s latest battle is challenging, though likely not as difficult as Cynthia’s. The new battle featuring Taunie and Urbain, on the other hand, might require a couple of tries to win.
