Who Is Johnny Joestar?

Summary

  • Part 7 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a fresh start, featuring a new protagonist unrelated to previous generations.
  • The main character, Johnny Joestar, is a homage to the original Jonathan Joestar but with a distinct background.
  • Although yet unconfirmed, fans anticipate an official announcement for the anime adaptation of Part 7 at JOJODAY.

I, as an enthusiastic fan, am eagerly anticipating the potential announcement of a new season for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure in April. The upcoming season seems poised to explore Part 7, Steel Ball Run, which offers a distinctive twist compared to the series thus far.

In contrast to previous parts, Part 7 introduces a fresh protagonist named Johnny Joestar. However, his connection to the other Joestars is not through bloodline but rather a unique twist in the narrative. Unlike the earlier parts that followed a generational story, this part embarks on a completely new adventure.

Part 7 Is A JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure “Restart”

In a fresh twist for the storyline, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7 is known as Steel Ball Run, since it centers around a competition called Steel Ball Run. Unlike its preceding parts, this installment marks a new chapter in the narrative. Instead of focusing on Jonathan Joestar and his kin, Steel Ball Run (SBR) introduces a different Joestar character who appears to be unconnected to the previous lineage. Interestingly enough, the protagonist in this part is another Jonathan Joestar.

Although SBR isn’t technically a reboot or soft reboot of the original storyline, it functions as a sort of “restart” by going back in time and introducing a new main character. This makes Part 7 accessible to new readers, while longtime fans who have read the earlier parts will find even more enjoyment in the story.

Part 7 represented a shift in the series from continuing in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump, as it had in the earlier parts, to being serialized instead in Ultra Jump magazine.

Is Johnny the Same As Jonathan Joestar From Phantom Blood?

Johnny Joestar, originally named Jonathan Joestar, serves as the primary character in “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7.” Despite sharing a name with the main characters from parts 1 and 2, Johnny is more of a tribute to the original Jonathan Joestar (and also Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode”), but it appears they are not blood-related kin.

Johnny and Jonathan, though possibly born around the same time in separate realities, are not just physically dissimilar but come from distinctly varied backgrounds. While Jonathan hails from a wealthy British family of the 1800s, Johnny was raised with American-Japanese heritage in the United States.

Prior to the start of Part 7, Johnny, formerly a skilled horse jockey, was forced to retire due to an accident that resulted in his paralysis. Following his encounter with Gyro Zeppeli, he elects to participate in the Steel Ball Run race as a means to uncover more about Steel Balls.

The Joestar Family, Explained

1. Character A is the protagonist, whose journey forms the central plotline.
2. Character B is a close friend or ally to Character A, often assisting or challenging them in various ways.
3. Character C is a family member or significant other to one of the main characters, contributing to their personal growth and development.
4. Character D is an antagonist or obstacle for Character A, creating conflict throughout the story.
5. Character E is a mentor or guide figure who provides wisdom and support to Character A.
6. Character F is a sidekick or confidant who accompanies Character A on their adventures.

  • Jonathan Joestar (Part 1)
    • George Joestar II
      • Joseph Joestar (Part 2)
        • Josuke Higashikata (Part 4)
        • Holy Kujo
          • Jotaro Kujo (Part 3, featured in Parts 4, 5 and 6)
            • Jolyne Kujo (Part 6)
  • Dio Brando (Parts 1, 3 and 6; antagonist, adopted)
    • Giorno Giovanna (Part 5)
    • Donatello Versus (Part 5, minor antagonist)
    • Rikiel (Part 5, minor antagonist)
    • Ungalo (Part 6, minor antagonist)

All of Dio’s sons are illegitimate children.

Then, I see Johnny Joestar and Diego Brando walk in, neither of them connected to any of the individuals here. Interestingly, several members from Johnny’s lineage share names with those from Jonathan’s family.

When Will The JoJo Part 7 Anime Be Released?

Although an anime adaptation of Steel Ball Run hasn’t been officially verified yet, fans eagerly await its confirmation. It appears possible that Part 7 could be officially unveiled at an online JoJo event on April 12, 2025. However, it should be noted that the official account has not confirmed whether a new anime series will be announced during this event.

If SBR is verified at JOJODAY, it’s likely that the anime will be planned for release in 2026. This is because the studio, David Production, is now primarily working on Fire Force Season 3.

Where Can You Watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure?

In numerous countries, including the United States, you can find “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” on Netflix, with both subtitled and dubbed versions in multiple languages. Notably, Part 6 (known as “Stone Ocean”) is exclusively offered on Netflix, whereas the earlier parts can also be accessed through Crunchyroll and other streaming services.

There seems to be uncertainty about whether Part 7 will only air on Netflix, as some fans have expressed dissatisfaction with how Netflix managed Stone Ocean.
