Old Star Wars Games That Are Difficult To Replay Nowadays

As a dedicated Star Wars fan with over three decades of fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that replaying some of the classic Star Wars games has become quite the challenge. The list you’ve shared highlights five such titles that, despite their timeless appeal and immersive gameplay, are either plagued by technical issues or simply hard to access due to lack of modern support.

Star Wars is undoubtedly one of the most successful franchises in history, boasting numerous merchandise and an impressive collection of games that offer great entertainment. Unfortunately, many of the older Star Wars games can be challenging to revisit, often due to technical glitches or limited availability of a remake.

However, devotees of the Star Wars franchise are well aware that there’s always a solution, and this list highlights five older Star Wars games that prove challenging to replay. Ranging from a once-acclaimed RPG showing signs of age, to a third-person shooter meticulously developed but in need of a remake.

5 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Barely Alive Thanks To The Modders

Despite the ongoing popularity of “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic,” especially since its latest release on Nintendo Switch, some might think revisiting this classic game is trouble-free. However, devoted Star Wars enthusiasts need to understand that such a replay comes with significant challenges: technical glitches, compatibility problems, crashes, bugs, and numerous other issues.

Without finding the correct setup, navigating an extensive tutorial, and adding specific add-ons, many gamers may encounter numerous problems while playing this fantastic game on current systems. It’s impressive how the modding community has kept this game playable to some extent, even though a remake hasn’t been released yet.

4 STAR WARS: Battlefront 2 (Classic)

Impossible To Find People Online

Due to widespread cheating problems, the popular game Star Wars Battlefront 2 lost its viability, causing fans to shift their focus. When the remastered version of the original Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Classic was launched on various platforms in March 2024, many were hopeful. However, numerous compatibility issues, troubles with matchmaking, and an inadequate anti-cheat system led to a decrease in the active player base.

The current situation has drastically decreased its daily user base to critically low numbers (less than 500 people), which poses significant issues since many matches require at least 40 players to initiate. It’s unfortunate, given that neither the remake nor the original version seems functional right now. Players can only hope for the next online First-Person Shooter game to launch and learn from past errors.

3 Star Wars: Empire At War

Hard To Replay Due To Technical Issues That Need A Lot Of Modding

Star Wars: Empire At War caters to a distinct group of gamers, namely fans of Star Wars and real-time strategy titles. This game offers an engaging perspective on the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and The Empire by focusing on the behind-the-scenes efforts of individuals striving to secure victory for their faction.

Although this game introduced one of the most enigmatic and iconic villains in the Star Wars universe, it’s become challenging to enjoy nowadays because of insufficient support and numerous technical problems that have mounted over time. These issues mainly involve crashes, loss of save data, and campaign bugs that require extensive unofficial patches and modifications for resolution. Regrettably, there are no plans underway for a remake of this game, leaving players with the less-than-perfect Steam version as their only option.

2 Star Wars Episode 1: Jedi Power Battles

Sadly, It Is Nearly Impossible To Play Today

As a devoted fan, I’ve found myself in a bit of a pickle. This game I adore can only be played if I own a functioning PlayStation 1, Dreamcast, or Game Boy Advance, and even then, I need an original copy of the game. It seems that emulation might be my only hope, but it requires quite specific PC settings and hardware. Sadly, not every setup is compatible with the intricate needs of the emulation engine, leaving me in a bit of a conundrum.

In simpler terms, Jedi Power Battles was almost like a contemporary Star Wars action-RPG game, offering a thrilling experience when played with friends. Unfortunately, cooperative play didn’t feature split screen, but the classic side-scrolling mechanic required strategic positioning to prevent being knocked out if a teammate moved too far from the screen. Despite this, it was an exhilarating game because players could join forces with various Jedi characters, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, and demolish Separatist Androids in massive quantities. Many Star Wars fans would delight in a remake or a similar game designed for modern consoles and PCs.

1 Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire

Emulation Is The Only Viable Option

  • Release Year: 1996
  • Platforms: Nintendo 64, PC (Port)
  • Developer: LucasArts

In the realm of galactic adventures, I found myself immersed in the thrilling narrative of “Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire,” a third-person action game for the Nintendo 64. As Dash Rendar, a pilot, smuggler, and key figure in the Rebel Alliance, I navigated through the complex web of intergalactic conflicts. My path crossed with an old friend, Han Solo, during the dramatic events of “The Empire Strikes Back.” In a pivotal moment, I was tasked to hop aboard a vacant Snowspeeder and engage in an electrifying fight against the impending AT-AT assault.

The game mixes spaceship piloting in intense flight battles with a lot of shooting action, and it was considered (alongside titles like Golden Eye 64) one of the best action games of the era. Sadly, the port for PC available on Steam is less than ideal, and its controls are clunky and hard to use. That, alongside the many technical difficulties, makes replaying it a stressful experience. The game is still officially listed on the Nintendo page, so a release for Nintendo Switch could be planned.
