The trend of job cuts in the video game development sector is gaining momentum, as Cyan Worlds – creators of Myst and Firmament – have revealed that they will be letting go of some staff members at their studio.
On a recent social media update on Friday afternoon, the studio announced that unfortunately, 12 positions will be terminated as they’ve made their best attempts to prevent this situation. These changes are set to take place by the end of March.
As a dedicated gamer and member of this gaming community, I find myself in a challenging predicament in 2025. The ever-evolving landscape of the gaming industry has placed us in a tricky situation where we must carefully consider the long-term prosperity of our studio versus the immediate, month-to-month demands of game development.

Over the last year, we’ve been completely open with every member of Cyan about the rough seas we’re navigating and the potential hazards on the horizon. Although the prospect of layoffs wasn’t unexpected by the team, it remains a sad reality for everyone involved.
At Cyan Worlds, those affected by the layoffs are being offered a severance package. Additionally, the company is actively assisting them in finding new job opportunities. This aid encompasses disseminating the details of the laid-off employees who are currently seeking employment elsewhere.
For Cyan Worlds, the main focus now lies in securing funding for their upcoming project and strengthening the studio.
They shared, “For quite some time now, we’ve navigated various challenges. But despite the hardships, we’re determined to carry on. Our aspiration is to persist and keep offering the exceptional experiences that are uniquely ours.
“As always, we are grateful for all the love and support from our amazing player community.”
Back in 1987, the game development company known as Cyan Worlds was launched by siblings Robyn and Rand Miller. Over the past 38 years, this studio has successfully released numerous video games to the public.
