As a seasoned adventurer who’s braved the depths of Dredge for countless hours, I must say, the hunt for the elusive Black Liquid is a tale as old as time itself. But fear not, my fellow seafarer! For I shall guide you through the treacherous waters and help you reap the rewards that this mysterious substance holds.

Players exploring the latest additions in the “The Iron Rig” DLC from Dredge will come across a frequently needed item – the ‘Dark Canister’. This crafting material is essential for many of the expansion’s top new items, and finding out how to acquire them can be challenging, particularly during the early stages of your DLC adventure. Here’s a breakdown of when and how you can obtain Dark Canisters in “The Iron Rig” DLC.

To start gathering the Dark Canisters in Dredge, begin by finishing the initial segment of “Strange Specimens,” which is the first Science Lab Quest. During this quest, a Scientist directs you to The Marrows where you need to gather four sea creature samples. Keep in mind that certain areas within The Marrows are now coated with black oil-like sludge. These samples can only be retrieved from and near this dark liquid, and an upgraded Infused Rod, which you’ll receive early in “The Iron Rig,” is required to do so. The four samples you must collect are:

SampleLocation/Description
Paddlefish
  • The Marrows
  • Coastal (Upgrade)
  • Rod Only
  • Any Time
Tullimonstrum
  • The Marrows
  • Coastal (Upgrade)
  • Rod Only
  • Any Time
Osteostracan
  • The Marrows
  • Shallow (Upgrade)
  • Rod Only
  • Any Time
Sea Cucumber
  • The Marrows
  • Crab
  • Pod (Drop in black goo)
  • Any Time.

After you’ve gathered the samples, bring them back to the Scientist. In the next stage of your journey, you’ll need the Dark Canisters. The Scientist will task you with obtaining a sample of the dark liquid that has contaminated certain parts of the sea. However, to achieve this, players must first unlock a particular tool: the Siphon Trawler.

How to Unlock the Siphon Trawler:

The Siphon Trawler is part of the Factory’s Tier 2 equipment list. Luckily, the second tier of equipment is unlocked automatically upon completing the Scientist’s first fishing request. The Siphon Trawler is the first item on the Factory’s Tier 2 list, and will require the following items to unlock:

  • Crate x1, Basic Trawl Net x1, $50

If you currently have a Fundamental Fishing Net, you can employ it to construct a Siphon Trawler. On the other hand, if you don’t possess one, most Shipyards offer them for sale, along with the Iron Rig’s Underground Trading Post, once it has been unlocked.

After you’ve unlocked the Siphon Trawler, you’ll find it beneficial to place it aboard your vessel. Keep in mind that it will occupy four spots in your net inventory, similar to many other Fishing Nets.

Where to Find the Black Liquid:

The Black Liquid is still found in the Marrows, and will remain in the same location as you previously encountered when completing the first fishing for the Scientist. From the Iron Rig, simply use Manifest to return to the Marrows and then to the pools of black sludge.

As I approach the mucky area, I’ll be sure to pull up my skill wheel and pick the Fishing Trawler option. The Siphon Trawler functions exactly like any other trawler in this game. When I reach the boundary of the liquid sludge, I’ll hit the square/X button to activate the Siphon Trawler.

Be cautious of the tiny creatures found near the dark substance. They’re prone to leaping onto your vessel, resulting in a “Dark Splash” occupying space in your storage. If you possess fish within your inventory, manage them carefully as they have a tendency to spoil when grouped together. However, remember that these fish can be useful for crafting purposes later, so storing them wisely could save you space.

While operating the Siphon Trawler, look for a small indicator on the lower left portion of your HUD screen. This gauge shows how much you’re filling your initial Dark Canister. Once it’s completely full, you’ll notice a brief message appearing. When employing the Siphon Trawler, remember these useful tips:

  • Time moves faster when a Dark Canister is being filled, so pay attention to the clock as you work.
  • The panic gauge fills faster while in the black liquid, so make sure to keep an eye on the surrounding waters. Large monsters will approach incredibly fast. Have an exit plan in mind, just like you would in any other scenario.
  • The Siphon Trawler degrades like all items. The basic version lasts for one day. It only degrades while it is turned on, so you should have plenty of time to fill canisters between repairs. However, always check the state before heading out.

1st step: Grab your initial Dark Canister.

Following the fulfillment of the second fishing task for The Scientist, a colossal sea creature will rise from the deep waters. This event signals that several enhancements become accessible, among them being the second level upgrade for The Foundry. This upgrade requires one crate and upon completion, the Foundry becomes capable of manufacturing Dark Canisters using resources.

Dark Canisters can be crafted with:

  • Metal Scraps x2
  • Dark Splash x2
