Joseph Cross, the art director for Bungie’s upcoming game Marathon, has unexpectedly departed from the studio. This news comes shortly after the game’s release date was set for March 2026.
Marathon, a new first-person shooter multiplayer game, was first announced in 2023 as a PlayStation exclusive developed by Bungie. While originally planned for release in September 2025, the game faced delays due to issues like accusations of copied artwork. This month, Bungie showed off updated gameplay and set a new release date of March 2026. However, a significant developer has since left the project.
Joseph Cross, Marathon’s Art Director, Has Left Bungie Ahead of Release
The Game Post noticed earlier today that Joseph Cross, a former Destiny 2 artist, updated his LinkedIn profile to indicate he finished working at Bungie in 2025. Kotaku has since confirmed that Cross, who was the art director for Marathon, has left the studio. Neither Cross nor Bungie have publicly commented on the departure.
It’s not exactly known why Joseph left Marathon, but there are a couple of likely reasons. He may have finished his work and wasn’t needed anymore, or he simply decided to leave Bungie. The Destiny studio has faced some challenges lately, including lawsuits and declining sales. If the reports are true, Bungie will probably announce a new art director soon, particularly with the game’s planned launch in March 2026.
