New Retro RPG on Steam Has Serious Final Fantasy Vibes

If you loved classic action RPGs like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy, then Philna Fantasy is a new game you’ll want to check out. Launching January 15, 2026, exclusively on Steam for PC, it’s designed to recapture the magic of those beloved games. Philna Fantasy combines retro pixel art with gameplay that feels familiar yet fresh, offering a nostalgic experience for long-time fans while also forging its own identity.

The 1990s produced some of the most beloved role-playing games ever, like the original Secret of Mana (1993), Chrono Trigger from Square Enix, and the hugely popular Final Fantasy VI, often hailed as one of the best games from the 16-bit era. Philna Fantasy takes a lot of inspiration from these classic RPGs in both its look and how it plays, and fans of those older games will enjoy exploring its fantastical world and engaging story as a new hero begins an epic adventure.

Philna Fantasy is Bringing Back Classic RPG Vibes with Modern Enhancements

I’m so excited about this new game, Philna Fantasy! Another Indie just showed it off, and it looks amazing. It’s a pixel RPG that really captures that classic feel, but with modern gameplay. The story is about an adventurer who ends up on this continent called Votland after a crash landing, and they have to figure out what’s going on with this dangerous force called the Void that’s slowly destroying everything. You get to pick one of four classes – a powerful Berserker, a ranged Ranger, a magic-using Chrono Mage, or a sneaky Assassin – and explore this beautiful world full of forests and ruins. There are tons of skills to learn in each class, and you can even choose from four different difficulty levels, so you can really customize the game to how you like to play. It looks like a really deep and engaging RPG!

Beyond exploring the main world of Votland, players will discover 9 uniquely designed dungeons, each filled with challenging fights, puzzles, and secret rewards. Returning to these dungeons offers new loot, including powerful gear and materials to create items or potions. Players can also collect special cards by defeating monsters and add them to their Magic Belt – a customizable piece of equipment that lets them activate abilities like increased damage, better resources, and health boosts, allowing for unique combat and exploration strategies. Like the companion pets in games such as Final Fantasy XIV Online, Philna Fantasy features animal companions that help with battles and finding treasure, all while providing friendly companionship on your adventure through Votland.

The main story of Philna Fantasy should take about 15 hours to finish, but optional side quests offer even more story and unlock secret parts of the game. As you play, you’ll discover the culture, history, and lives of the people and places in the world of Votland. Philna Fantasy blends familiar elements of classic pixel-art ARPGs with innovative features like the Magic Belt, creating a journey that feels both nostalgic and new. If you’re interested, you can add Philna Fantasy to your Steam wishlist now, and get ready for its release on January 15th.
