Back then, they were the paragons of shinobi power, capable of taking on entire armies and standing toe-to-toe with gods themselves. But now, in this brave new world of Boruto, they’ve been reduced to nothing more than ceremonial figureheads.

Armed with ninjutsu absorption and space-time abilities, these formidable figures appear almost godlike. To make matters worse, the current Five Kage have previously faced off against Momoshiki and Kinshiki, an Otsutsuki member who is currently the least powerful among the clan. Their struggle to control Kinshiki showcased their vulnerability against early Otsutsuki, which suggests they are no match for the newer contenders in the storyline.
Additionally, the unusual progression of Boruto’s power levels adds complexity to the situation for the Kage. It’s worth noting that Naruto and Sasuke, who are stronger than all other Kages combined, were overpowered by Jigen in a one-on-two encounter. Due to the impressive achievements of the past Kage, the current leaders often find themselves struggling to live up to their predecessors’ legacies. Additionally, the storyline in Boruto presents a dismal outlook, as characters like Kurotsuchi are taken captive by deceptive means, Chojuro struggles against imposters posing as the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, Gaara is defeated by Urashiki Otsutsuki, and even Naruto loses control over Kurama’s powers. As a result, the Five Kage have become largely irrelevant within the storyline.
In the Boruto: TBV manga, Shikamaru’s ascension to the temporary position of Eighth Hokage lessens the influence traditionally held by Kage. It appears that the power structure established by the Otsutsuki and Karma users is not likely to change in the near future. Previously, all four other Kage had already taken a backseat in the story, but now even Naruto, the Seventh Hokage, has been placed on hold, leaving him absent from the narrative as well. With all five Kage no longer present, their once respected and profound positions seem to have lost much of their significance.
I plan on becoming Hokage by choosing a different path than my dad!
As a devoted fan, I believe Boruto: Naruto Next Generations has the power to shake up the current state of affairs by installing a more formidable Hokage in future generations. With Sarada emerging as a strong candidate for this position, there’s hope that the prestige of Kage might be restored. That being said, the Kages from other nations seem content with their present status, so it won’t be Sarada taking over from Shikamaru as Hokage any time soon. For now, it seems like the title of Kage will continue to hold little significance in Boruto’s storyline.
