Borderlands 4 is out now, but like most recent games from Gearbox, the launch is just the start. If you’re thinking about playing, it’s helpful to know what content is available now and what’s coming later. Luckily, Gearbox has shared its plans for after the game’s release, and it looks like Borderlands 4 is built to be at its best in 2026.
The game definitely had a strong launch, but it’s still being improved, particularly when it comes to performance and balancing issues on consoles. For players excited about Borderlands 4 in 2026, expect its development roadmap to be just as important as the initial release itself.
Borderlands 4’s End of Year Recap
So, as a longtime Borderlands fan, it feels like Borderlands 4 is in that familiar post-launch spot – the gameplay feels solid, there’s enough to do, but it’s still getting its feet under it technically. They’ve been releasing patches to fix bugs and balance things, especially the stuff at the very end of the game and how good the loot is. Gearbox has been upfront about some problems getting it running smoothly on all platforms, and the Switch version is still taking a bit longer. But honestly, they’ve already added a good amount of new content since launch, which is great to see.
I’m already having a blast with Borderlands 4! They’ve kicked things off with a spooky seasonal event called Horrors of Kairos, and I’ve started working through the first of four Bounty Packs in How Rush Saved Mercenary Day. Plus, they just added Bloomreaper the Invincible – the first Invincible Boss! It’s cool that each update also brings new patches, Vault Cards, and cosmetic items. But honestly, looking at the roadmap, it feels like the best stuff is still yet to come, and I can’t wait!
Post-Launch Roadmap: What’s Next and What Follows
Early 2026 will bring significant updates to Borderlands 4, including a major story expansion and substantial gameplay improvements like new item rarities and playable characters. Gearbox is committed to enhancing the game’s endgame experience, though some of these additions will arrive sooner in the first quarter of 2026 than others.
Bounty Packs, Pearlescents, and Systemic Updates
Starting in early 2026, a new expansion called Bounty Pack 2 is planned. If the first one is any indication, it will be a significant story addition with new powerful items (legendaries), higher difficulty levels (UVHM), character customization options (cosmetics), and a new Vault Card offering ongoing rewards. Also coming early next year is the return of Pearlescent rarity items – incredibly rare and powerful gear – as a free update for everyone. Gearbox wants these items to be worth the effort it takes to find them.
Bounty Packs were initially designed as paid content, but the first one, How Rush Saved Mercenary Day, was released for free. The remaining four BL4 Bounty Packs will continue to be available for purchase.
Major DLC and the Arrival of C4SH
Later this quarter, a big new story expansion called Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned will be released. It features Ellie, a popular character, and explores a creepy, cosmic horror theme. Alongside this, players can look forward to C4SH, the first new playable character coming after launch. C4SH is a former casino worker who now wanders the world chasing lucky streaks, and his special abilities all involve taking risks for potentially big rewards.
Roadmap Snapshot
| Early Q1 2026 | Early Q1 2026 | Late Q1 2026 | Late Q1 2026 |
| Bounty Pack 2 | Pearlescent Rarity (Free Update) | Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned | New Vault Hunter: C4SH |
Future updates will also include cosmetic items like new character heads and skins, weapon designs, vehicle paint schemes, and ways to customize your ECHO-4 drone.
What’s Likely Past Early 2026
Image via Gearbox Software After the first quarter, the plan for future updates isn’t fully defined, but it looks like we can expect a regular pattern. We’ll keep getting weekly updates to fix bugs and improve performance, and monthly updates will concentrate on game balance and potentially some temporary events. Vault Cards will likely be added to over time to keep players engaged, and the systems behind the game, like SHIFT integration, will probably be improved gradually as well.
- Ongoing weekly patches
- Monthly balance and major updates
- First story DLC and Vault Hunter arriving in early 2026
The gradual release of Borderlands 4 is a good thing, allowing the game to launch smoothly and steadily improve over time, with a more complete experience expected by mid-year. We can probably expect smaller updates like seasonal events or new challenges, but major additions – such as the next story chapter or a new playable character – will likely arrive in the second half of the year or later.
2026 Is a Big Year for Borderlands 4
Most signs suggest that 2026 will be the year Borderlands 4 really hits its stride. The game’s developers are planning major improvements, new playable characters, two story expansions, and a revamped endgame, making the next year crucial for its success. Players who haven’t bought it yet will find a much more refined and feature-packed game if they wait, though there’s still work to be done. Those who already have the game can look forward to continued updates and improvements to the things fans are already enjoying.
For Those on the Fence: Is Now the Right Time to Buy Borderlands 4?
I’m really hoping that by 2026, Borderlands 4 will finally be the game Gearbox originally dreamed of making. Whether you decide to play right away or wait a bit probably depends on how much you’re okay with some early issues and how hyped you are for what’s coming next. One thing’s for sure though: Gearbox is committed to supporting this game for a long time, and they’re building Borderlands 4 to be something we can enjoy for years to come.
Quick checklist before you buy:
- Has the current patch cadence stabilized the game to your standards?
- Is your preferred platform fully supported, or still stuck in Limbo?
- Do the first story DLC and Vault Hunter additions appeal to you?
If everything comes together as planned, it might be a good idea to start looking forward to Borderlands 4 in 2026.
