Sony has significantly expanded its ownership of the beloved Peanuts franchise. In a deal worth $457 million, Sony acquired a 41% stake in Peanuts Holdings LLC through its purchase of Canadian media company WildBrain’s shares. Combined with its existing 38% ownership through Sony Music Entertainment Japan, Sony now controls approximately 80% of the Peanuts brand, subject to final approvals.
Most people first encountered the world of Peanuts through Charles M. Schulz’s comic strip, which first appeared in U.S. newspapers on October 2, 1950. As the comic grew in popularity, it expanded to include more characters and spawned animated movies, a wide range of products, and appearances at theme parks around the world. Peanuts is one of the most popular and enduring comic strip franchises ever created, and while it now has new owners, dedicated fans likely won’t see any big changes anytime soon.
Sony Buys Majority Ownership of the Peanuts for $457 Million
Sony Pictures Entertainment has reached an agreement with WildBrain to gain control of their shares in Peanuts Holdings LLC, the company that owns the Peanuts brand. This deal, as first reported by Variety, means Sony and Sony Music Entertainment Japan (SMEJ) will collectively own about 80% of Peanuts Holdings LLC, with the Schulz family retaining the remaining 20%. Peanuts Worldwide will continue to manage the Peanuts brand and business, while Sony and SMEJ will jointly lead Peanuts Holdings LLC. Shunsuke Muramatsu, CEO of SMEJ, expressed excitement about leveraging Sony’s global resources to grow the Peanuts brand even further.
This agreement clears WildBrain’s debts, allowing the company to concentrate on developing its popular brands like Strawberry Shortcake and Teletubbies. It also provides financial security for creating digital content for platforms like YouTube and exploring new technologies. WildBrain will continue to support the Peanuts brand through content distribution and licensing. Importantly, the recent partnership with Apple TV to produce a Peanuts animated movie and additional shows isn’t expected to be affected by the acquisition, and existing Peanuts merchandise deals – like Snoopy collectibles and video games – are also likely to continue. However, fans should watch for official updates regarding the future of Peanuts.
Many major tech companies, especially those focused on video games, are now looking to expand into other areas of entertainment. Adapting video games into movies and TV shows has already been a successful strategy for these companies. For example, the Fallout series on Amazon Prime Video, from Microsoft and Bethesda, won an award for Best Adaptation, and PlayStation’s The Last of Us on HBO not only won awards but also increased sales of the original game. Nintendo is also making big moves, with the incredibly popular Super Mario Bros. Movie and several Super Nintendo World theme parks already open in the United States and Japan, with another one planned for Singapore.
I’m really excited to see what Sony does with the Peanuts! Theme parks are clearly a huge money-maker – just look at Disney and now Nintendo. Sony’s about to start benefiting from having Peanuts characters at Universal Studios Japan and Knott’s Berry Farm, plus all the sales of Peanuts merchandise. They’re already putting more effort into turning their games into TV shows and movies, and I think buying Peanuts opens up a lot of interesting possibilities. As a fan, I’ll definitely be watching to see how they expand the Peanuts brand and if this leads to more of Sony’s own characters getting similar treatment in other areas of entertainment.
