BF3 2.0

During the seventh console generation, the Battlefield series squared off against Call of Duty, but since then, it’s no surprise that the franchise has faced challenges. The latest addition to the series, Battlefield 2042, didn’t meet fans’ expectations as a blockbuster hit. Upon release, the game had technical issues, offered minimal content, and made changes to the Battlefield formula that left many players disgruntled. As a result, Battlefield 2042 was met with a barrage of unfavorable reviews on platforms like Steam and Metacritic, earning the title of the lowest-rated Battlefield game in history.

Despite not initially gaining significant traction like some other live service games with rocky launches such as Sea of Thieves and Fallout 76, Battlefield 2042 has seen improvements over time. Interestingly, the team behind the game, DICE, has announced that a new Battlefield title is currently in development. As of now, this upcoming game doesn’t have an official name, but it’s slated for release within the next year. Often referred to as Battlefield 6, this new installment aims to revitalize the Battlefield franchise. However, based on leaked gameplay footage, it appears that the upcoming game bears a strong resemblance to previous entries in the series.

Battlefield 6 Seems to Share a Lot in Common With the Old Battlefield Games

Gameplay Footage of Battlefield 6 Has Leaked Online, and Reception Has Been Mostly Positive

Despite DICE and EA not publicly revealing a trailer for Battlefield 6, they’ve conducted exclusive playtests inviting participants to offer feedback on the upcoming game before its release. Given that they’ve signed non-disclosure agreements, these playtesters are supposed to keep the game details confidential. However, some of them have leaked raw gameplay footage of Battlefield 6 across various social media platforms. Interestingly, EA has shown minimal attempts to remove these gameplay videos.

Following the disappointing outcome of Battlefield 2042, the Battlefield community has expressed caution about future Battlefield games. However, early feedback on Battlefield 6’s leaked gameplay has been generally favorable. The as-yet unnamed installment seems to be addressing many of the contentious elements introduced in Battlefield 2042. Unlike its predecessor, Battlefield 6 does not feature specialists, massive 128-player battles, or a sci-fi setting. Instead, it is set in a contemporary location and places significant focus on destructible environments.

It’s a Good Sign that Battlefield 6 is Harkening Back to the Battlefield 3 & 4 Era

The new version of Battlefield is frequently likened to Battlefield 3 from 2011. Since many gamers consider Battlefield 3 and its sequel, Battlefield 4, as the pinnacle of the Battlefield series, this similarity might be a positive development. In fact, Vince Zampella, who oversees Battlefield, has shared similar sentiments about this aspect. In an interview with IGN last year, he mentioned that Battlefield 6 aims to return to the essence of what Battlefield is, by harking back to the era of Battlefield 3 and 4, where everything was modern.

Some might argue that the familiarity of Battlefield 6 could be a disadvantage, implying a possible lack of creativity on DICE’s part. Yet, considering the events surrounding Battlefield 2042, perhaps this is exactly what the series requires: a return to its roots, offering a traditional Battlefield experience that draws inspiration from its most successful installments instead of pursuing something drastically new. While experimentation in games isn’t inherently negative, the alterations made in Battlefield 2042 seemed more like following trends rather than genuine innovation. DICE should aim to introduce fresh, distinct features in Battlefield 6 to set it apart from earlier games such as Battlefield 3 and 4, but they don’t need to overhaul the series’ formula so significantly that it becomes unrecognizable.
