Even three years after it first came out, the PlayStation game Gran Turismo 7 is still attracting a lot of new players. According to the game’s producer, Kazunori Yamauchi, the game has a surprisingly active and growing community, despite being released in early 2022.
The Gran Turismo racing series has been a key feature of the PlayStation for nearly thirty years. Starting with the original Gran Turismo on the first PlayStation, each new game has significantly boosted Sony’s collection of titles. While Microsoft focused on the Forza series for realistic racing, Sony consistently supported Polyphony Digital’s popular Gran Turismo franchise. Even now, as PlayStation and Microsoft increasingly share games across platforms, it’s hard to envision Gran Turismo ever appearing on anything other than PlayStation.
Gran Turismo 7 is Still Gaining Players After Nearly Four Years
In a recent interview with GTPlanet, Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi discussed the continued success of Gran Turismo 7. He noted that despite being released several years ago, the game still has over 2 million active players, and that player numbers are still growing. Yamauchi believes Gran Turismo 7 is currently in the best position of any game in the series’ history, a phenomenon neither he nor PlayStation has seen before. Even with strong sales, it’s remarkable that the game continues to thrive so long after its release. Gran Turismo 7 will celebrate its fourth anniversary in March, and its growth shows no signs of slowing down.
These days, it’s common for players to quickly move from one game to another. However, Gran Turismo 7 is surprisingly holding strong, even without needing to offer big discounts to attract players. There are a couple of key reasons for this. First, the game is available on both PlayStation 4 and 5, which is a huge advantage. Many gamers haven’t upgraded to the newest consoles and are still playing on their PS4, so Gran Turismo 7 can reach a much larger audience. Second, GT7 is simply a high-quality racing game. It’s one of the best on PlayStation, and really dominates the realistic racing genre on Sony’s platforms. While there are other arcade-style racers available, nothing on PlayStation 5 matches the quality of Gran Turismo 7, making it the go-to choice for both existing fans and newcomers.
We’ve never experienced this phenomenon before, and neither has PlayStation.
The continued success of Gran Turismo 7 is largely thanks to Polyphony Digital’s excellent post-launch support. It’s easy to forget the game initially received negative reviews due to its aggressive use of microtransactions. However, the developers have completely changed things around. Just recently, Gran Turismo 7 received its largest content update ever, adding new cars, tracks, and more. This ongoing support not only welcomes new players but also keeps existing fans engaged for years. Because of this success, it’s uncertain when Polyphony Digital will release the next game in the series, as players are clearly still enjoying the current one.
