Valheim Player Shows Off Real-Life Bestiary

A skilled Valheim player is meticulously creating a real-life bestiary – a detailed, leather-bound book of the game’s creatures. It features hand-drawn illustrations and incredible detail, adding to the many impressive fan-made crafts inspired by Valheim.

Reddit user Itchy_Mycologist_848 is creating a bestiary – a collection of creatures – for the game Valheim. Despite their username suggesting an interest in fungi, they’ve decided to focus on the game’s many animals instead. They first shared the project in late November 2025 and have been posting updates on their progress since then.

Real-Life Valheim Bestiary Is Coming Together Amazingly Well

I’m seriously blown away by how incredible Itchy_Mycologist_848’s bestiary is coming along! It’s getting so much attention from the Valheim community, and for good reason. What really stands out is that it’s not just pretty pictures – these are detailed, hand-drawn illustrations. And the lettering? It’s amazing! Apparently, Itchy_Mycologist_848 actually designed the script to look like the Runestones from Valheim, and they wrote it all in Ukrainian! It’s such a cool, unique touch.

This Valheim Bestiary Was Aged with an Undrinkable Black Tea Bath

The bestiary isn’t just beautifully illustrated; it’s also crafted with incredible attention to detail. User Itchy_Mycologist_848 reports the pages were stained using a strong black tea – around 100 grams of tea mixed with 2.5 liters of water. That’s about five times the strength of a typical cup of tea! This creates a dark, bitter liquid with very little scent, but it gives the book a convincingly aged look. The final product resembles a weathered tome you might find in a longhouse from the game Valheim.

The bestiary is being built in a way that mirrors a typical playthrough of Valheim, starting with creatures found in the Meadows and Black Forest. Generally, entries are organized by the area they’re found in, though there are some exceptions. For example, the Serpent isn’t listed with other ocean creatures; it’s placed between the Black Forest and Swamp sections because players often encounter it while sailing to the Swamp after building a ship. So far, the author has illustrated common animals like boars, deer, and crows, as well as mythical creatures like Necks, Surtlings, Draugrs, and Wraiths. The boss from the Meadows, the large stag Eikthyr, is also featured prominently with several pages and illustrations dedicated to it.

Valheim Bestiary Creator Doesn’t Plan to Sell It, But *Does* Have a Patreon

After receiving requests from fellow Valheim players, Itchy_Mycologist_848 created a Patreon page called Trolaf_sketch to share more frequent updates on their work (and will continue posting on Reddit). Their first Patreon post, published in early December 2025, showed some pages focusing on the Meadows area and provided a progress report. They had just finished drawing the Swamp and were working on illustrations of creatures from the Mountains at the time. As of December 21st, six people are supporting the project through Patreon. The creator also recently thanked the community for their support, but clarified that they don’t plan to sell the book yet, as it remains a personal project with a lot of work still to be done.

Itchy_Mycologist_848’s Valheim Bestiary Can’t Be Completed Until 2026 at the Earliest

Even if Itchy_Mycologist_848 had already meticulously documented all of Valheim‘s creatures, their bestiary wouldn’t be complete. The game is still under development by Iron Gate Studios, with the ‘Deep North’ biome still to come. This new area will add several new animals—like seals—and enemies, including the imposing, horned Elakings. Iron Gate says the Deep North is planned for Valheim‘s 1.0 update, currently expected in 2026. That same year, the popular Viking survival game will also launch on PlayStation 5, with porting assistance from Fishlabs, the team that previously worked on the Xbox version.
