In a recent WIRED interview on YouTube (reported by GamesRadar+), Hideo Kojima talked about how Super Mario Bros. first got him into video games. He shared that it’s ‘definitely’ the game he’s played more than any other, spending a year playing it during college – even skipping classes to do so.

Hideo Kojima explained that he might not be working in games today if it weren’t for Super Mario. While he doesn’t play it much anymore – describing it as a simple side-scrolling game focused on jumping – he acknowledged that even a small addition like a dash button can significantly impact gameplay, altering jumps during attacks or dodges.

Hideo Kojima realized that even though Super Mario Bros. doesn’t have a complex storyline, it still creates a strong sense of adventure for the player. Seeing the game’s simple pixelated graphics and lack of narrative made him believe that video games had the potential to be even more impactful than movies, which inspired him to pursue a career in game development.
