The story of “Speak No Evil” commences as Ben and Louise Dalton, along with their child Agnes, embark on a summer getaway. They meet the captivating Paddy, part of a British family, during this trip. As the holiday concludes, Paddy extends an invitation for the Dalton’s to visit his countryside cottage. In search of a respite from their monotonous London existence, Ben and Louise decide to take up Paddy’s offer. They reunite with Paddy, his spouse Ciara, and their son Ant, who seems to have a speech impediment due to a genetic disorder, at the English countryside residence.
In Blumhouse’s chilling new horror flick, I, as a fan, find myself thrown into the Dalton family’s world, trying to keep up with the peculiar ways of Paddy and Ciara. It’s becoming increasingly clear that things aren’t as they appear, with Ant subtly hinting at some unspoken trouble. The strange events escalate when they invite Ben and me, Louise, out for a meal, and casually include their Syrian refugee friend, Muhjid (Motaz Malhees), to babysit Agnes and Ant without even consulting us. As we dine together, the dark past of Paddy and Ciara’s relationship unfolds, making me and Louise feel uneasy as their public displays of affection leave us squirming in our seats.
At a later point, Ant exhibits several scars to Agnes, and while Paddy is sound asleep, he secretly swipes Paddy’s keys and escorts Agnes to a barn housing a concealed trap door. This leads to a hidden room containing ill-gotten items as well as a photo album showcasing various families that Paddy and Ciara encountered on their vacation. Among the photos is one of Ant, with his tongue unaltered, reunited with his genuine family – it’s revealed that Paddy had killed this family and has been detaining Ant all along, intending to replicate this act with Agnes.
How does Speak No Evil End?
It appears that Agnes believes it’s crucial to inform her parents about Paddy and Ciara’s deceitful intentions, so she feigns a period by self-inflicting a wound elsewhere on her body. This tactic successfully draws the attention of her mother, Louise. With Louise now aware, Agnes confides in her about what Ant had shown her. The family then concoct a plan to depart, with Ant included.
Because you let us.
In this scenario, Louise retaliates forcefully, causing severe harm to Paddy’s face, and flees with Ben, Agnes, and Ant. Upon arrival, Paddy and Ciara’s acquaintance, Mike (Kris Hitchen), armed with a shotgun, intervenes on their behalf, only to engage in a firefight with the Dalton family. A scuffle ensues between Ben and Mike, but Louise intervenes, striking Mike over the head with a hammer and assaulting Paddy with corrosive chemicals, disabling him. As they attempt to escape, Ciara pursues them relentlessly, but they manage to push her off a high place, resulting in her death.
In the heart of the thrilling 2024 horror masterpiece, I find myself, much like Ben, drenched in the aftermath of chaos. After ridding myself of the harmful substances, I’m back on my toes, as Ben leaps from the roof, grabbing the essential ladder to save his family trapped within the house. In our desperate bid for freedom, Paddy manages to grab Agnes, forcing Ben to let go of his weapon. However, Agnes, with her quick wit, seizes an opportunity and grabs the sedative intended for her, swiftly jabbing it into Paddy, sending him crumbling down. As the movie reaches its chilling climax, The Dalton family prepares to depart, but Ant hesitates, picking up a brick with blind rage and shattering Paddy’s skull. With the losses of Ciara, Mike, and now Paddy, Ben, Louise, Agnes, and Ant hastily escape in the vehicle.
