Steam Co-Op Game from 2019 is Suddenly Blowing Up

The survival game Green Hell is seeing a surge in popularity, almost reaching its record for the number of players online at the same time, even years after it first came out. While dedicated survival game fans have always loved it, many people think Green Hell deserves to be even more well-known and played by a wider audience.

Steam has a lot of open-world survival games where you build and craft things. Popular titles like No Man’s Sky, Subnautica, and Rust are well-known, but Green Hell is a fantastic game that hasn’t always gotten the recognition it deserves. Thankfully, that’s changing, and more and more people are discovering Green Hell on Steam.

Green Hell Has Nearly 20,000 Concurrent Players on Steam Right Now

Data from SteamDB shows that Green Hell had almost 20,000 players online at the same time on December 23rd, which is impressive for a game that came out six years ago. Surprisingly, that’s the same peak number of players the game reached in 2020. Developed by Creepy Jar, Green Hell puts you in the role of a man struggling to survive in the Amazon rainforest. You can play the game alone, with friends, through a story campaign, or simply explore and survive on your own.

There Is a Good Reason Why Green Hell Is Blowing Up on Steam

Okay, so I just saw that Green Hell was on sale for like, 90% off on Steam’s Winter Sale! Seriously, I grabbed it for only a couple of bucks – around $2 or $3 depending on which version you get. It’s a really cool, but kinda overlooked, open-world survival game, so it’s a perfect time to check it out if you’re into that sort of thing. Just a heads up though, the sale ends on January 5th, and then it goes back up to its regular price of $20. Don’t miss out!

What Makes Green Hell a Classic Survival Game

Many players believe Green Hell is one of the most realistic survival games available, and its incredibly immersive experience is a major reason for its continued popularity. While new survival games are released often, few achieve the same level of realism as Green Hell. The game provides players with a wide variety of things to do – crafting, gathering resources, building shelters, and fighting – and requires them to manage numerous conditions. On top of basic needs like food and water, players also have to pay attention to their character’s mental state to avoid losing touch with reality.

Green Hell is a challenging survival game largely because it throws you into the Amazon rainforest with very little guidance. You’ll need to learn how to survive by experimenting – and likely dying a lot, especially at the beginning. This realistic approach will appeal to players who enjoy truly difficult open-world survival experiences, creating a deeply immersive feeling and highlighting the dangers of the Amazon, where even plants and animals can be deadly.

If you enjoy the challenging survival and open-world gameplay of Green Hell, you might also like The Planet Crafter, Raft, and Sons of the Forest. Good news – all three are currently on sale on Steam with discounts up to 69%! For fans of Green Hell‘s creator, Creepy Jar, a new game is in development called StarRupture. This sci-fi, open-world base-building game will also be played from a first-person perspective, but with more focus on shooting action. It’s expected to keep the detailed survival elements and large-scale exploration that Green Hell is known for. StarRupture will enter early access on January 6, 2026, right after the current Green Hell sale ends.
