One Star Wars Jedi Character Could Be the 'Cere' of its Threequel

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated the galaxy far, far away since the days of Star Wars: Jedi Knight, I can confidently say that the prospect of playing as Merrin in the next installment of Star Wars Jedi is nothing short of thrilling. The development of this enigmatic character from her semi-antagonistic role in Fallen Order to her expanded presence and growth in Survivor has piqued my interest and left me eager for more.

The eagerly anticipated third installment of the renowned “Star Wars Jedi” series may not be out yet, but “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” has subtly paved the way for possible future plots. Clues like Cal Kestis being pursued by Boba Fett and Bode Akuna’s daughter Kata learning the Force suggest potential storylines in the upcoming sequel. However, it’s unknown if these will materialize. One development that many “Star Wars Jedi” enthusiasts have longed for since the days of “Jedi: Fallen Order” seems more probable now, thanks to a short scene featuring Cere Junda in “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor”. This much-anticipated feature is the chance to control the Dathomirian Nightsister Merrin.

Merrin’s Development in the Star Wars Jedi Games

Initially appearing as a semi-adversary in the game “Fallen Order”, Merrin hails from the planet Dathomir. One of the rare individuals who lived through General Grievous’ massacre of the Dathomirian Nightsisters during the Clone Wars, Merrin spent years living alone, mastering her witches’ magic and minimizing interactions with the brutal Zabrak Nightbrothers. Convinced that the Jedi were responsible for the death of her people, she crossed paths with Taron Malicos, a fallen Jedi survivor seeking to learn magic from Merrin and manipulate the Nightbrothers to establish a new order of dark side practitioners. Eventually, she encountered Kestis and initially viewed him as an enemy. However, upon discovering Malicos’ intentions and sharing similar past hardships with Kestis as solitary survivors, her hostility towards him dissipated.

At the conclusion of “Fallen Order”, Merrin became a member of the Mantis’ team, assisting them in thwarting the Imperial agenda and nurturing a romantic bond with Kestis. In “Survivor”, Merrin is portrayed as deepening her understanding of Dathomirian magic, aiding Junda in rescuing Force-sensitive individuals and uncovering the Secret Path. Throughout “Survivor”, Merrin assumes a more active role compared to her brief appearances earlier, acting as a regular companion rather than a background character in “Fallen Order”. She even joined forces with Junda to protect the Hidden Path from Darth Vader’s attack and assisted Kestis in defeating the rogue Jedi Bode Akuna.

To date, only a handful of characters are said to have survived the massacre by General Grievous on Dathomir, as depicted in the Star Wars canon. These include Mother Talzin, Merrin, and Morgan Elsbeth.

Merrin’s Potential Role in Star Wars Jedi 3

In the upcoming “Star Wars Jedi 3”, the crew of the Mantis, now on the secret planet Tanalorr, choose to raise Kata with the wisdom of the Force. This opens up numerous opportunities for both Merrin and the rest of the crew to evolve and prosper. If Merrin and Kestis develop a romantic relationship, they could become adoptive parents to Kata, with Merrin imparting her magical knowledge and Kestis teaching Jedi lessons, including lightsaber use. Kestis might also learn some magic from Merrin and teach her how to wield a lightsaber, ensuring they are equally skilled in various abilities.

In the vein of how ‘Survivor’ incorporated the idea of players assuming roles beyond their main character, as seen with Junda’s brief skirmish against Vader, Respawn could extend this concept in Star Wars Jedi 3 by enabling players to control Merrin during certain missions or even make the game cooperative. Rather than just one level like Junda in Survivor, multiple levels could be designed where players take command of Merrin instead of Kestis, thus offering a glimpse into more of Merrin’s abilities and potentially providing insights into Merrin’s thoughts about current and past events.

Merrin’s Potential Gameplay in Star Wars Jedi 3

If Merrin is introduced as a playable character or for certain levels/co-op gameplay in the Star Wars Jedi series, she might be designed with similar mechanics to Kestis and Junda but with unique features. For instance, she could perform double jumps, dashes, and healing like Junda, but instead of climbing, she might teleport to specific locations using her magical abilities.
