ARC Raiders is a surprisingly deep game, offering complexity in both its overall gameplay and the details of how things work. While the exciting combat will grab many players’ attention, skillful movement is just as crucial for winning fights and surviving. The game teaches you the basics of moving around – rolling, sliding, and climbing – but mastering these mechanics unlocks a whole new level of play. Even just getting from one place to another can become a creative challenge, rewarding players who learn to use movement to their advantage.
In ARC Raiders, getting around effectively involves two main areas: fighting and exploring. Certain skills are more useful for navigating the map, especially when dealing with heights, while others give you a big advantage in combat with just a few extra button presses. No matter your skill level – whether you’re a new player or a veteran – mastering these movement techniques is crucial for success. They can dramatically improve your performance, even after many hours of gameplay.
Slide-Rolls
Constantly Changing Direction
- Animation canceling on the go.
- Switching direction mid-slide to be more unpredictable.
Players in Topside can dodge attacks and gain an advantage over opponents primarily by rolling and sliding. These movements make you a harder target to hit. Beyond simply dodging, skilled players can use advanced techniques to really outmaneuver their enemies. A particularly effective tactic is sliding into cover, quickly shooting, and then immediately rolling back out – even adding another slide for extra flair. This gives you control of the fight and is difficult for opponents to counter.
This technique simplifies close-quarters combat by keeping players constantly moving and allowing them to quickly find cover between shots. Once players become proficient, they can combine it with abilities like Heroic Leap and Slip and Slide to cover even more ground with each roll and slide, making it a surprisingly powerful strategy. It’s also very easy to execute, giving players a huge advantage in almost any fight – they can confidently engage opponents knowing they can likely win by repeatedly dodging in and out of sight.
Momentum Control
Instantly Going From Stationary To Unhittable
- Jumps and slides to boost movement.
- Using ziplines to gain speed downwards.
Movement in ARC Raiders feels natural because it’s based on building up speed and momentum. You’ll naturally go faster downhill and slower uphill, just like in real life. Players can really use this to their advantage – for example, you can build up a lot of speed on a zipline and then launch yourself forward into a run or slide. Jumps are also helpful; they give you a boost for almost any movement, especially when climbing or using ziplines, so it’s a good idea to jump before you start those actions.
These movement rules are also important in battles. If you’re sliding quickly, rolling in the same direction will significantly increase your distance. Even if you try to move in the opposite direction while running, you’ll still keep some of your speed. Be careful, though – one wrong move can instantly stop you. That’s why it’s important to know what slows you down, like sliding into stairs, and to focus on staying fast and difficult to hit.
Falling Grabs
Taking A Leap Of Faith
- Removes fall damage entirely.
- Locations become easily accessible.
The physics in ARC Raiders aren’t very realistic, and players are finding ways to take advantage of this in Raids. The biggest issue is how ledge grabs and fall damage work. Players can avoid all fall damage by simply grabbing onto any surface while falling. This also works with things like ziplines and ladders – players can jump from great heights without taking damage as long as they interact with these objects during their descent.
Spaceport is a great map to showcase this technique. After looting the central tower, players can jump down and immediately connect with a zipline, saving them from a fall. But even from less obvious spots, you can often grab onto ledges while falling – almost anything counts as a soft landing! Things like lampposts, window sills, or even certain arches can cushion your fall, and it looks really impressive when you pull off a daring escape.
Snap Hook Movement
An Extra Trick Up Your Sleeve
- Instantly scale entire buildings.
- Huge mobility options, both vertically and horizontally.
Players have access to a lot of useful items, and it can be tricky to decide which ones to take into a match. While some items are easy to find and make, others, like the rare Snap Hook, are much harder to get. But if you do manage to get a Snap Hook, it dramatically increases your movement options, essentially turning the map into a miniature version of a Spider-Man game.
Okay, I’m seriously loving the grapple! It’s way longer than I expected, letting you get to some really hidden spots where people rarely bother to look for loot. And it’s not just for going up! You can actually use the hook on the ground to swing forward, and if you time it with a jump, you can cover a huge distance with almost no effort. It’s a little scary to bring a Snap Hook into a raid, but honestly, it makes you feel so much more capable. I’ve found some amazing camping spots, and it’s awesome being able to make a quick escape that nobody anticipates!
Perfect Falls
Keeping Those Knees Intact
- Roll input before landing to mitigate fall damage.
- Ready to Roll increases the window.
Falling from heights is always dangerous in games, and in ARC Raiders, it’s a major threat. Players often fall to their deaths because there aren’t always ledges to grab or ways to avoid the impact. Luckily, you can use a Recovery Roll – a quick roll performed just as you land – to lessen or even completely avoid fall damage. Just be sure to time it right!
As players progress, they can unlock the ‘Ready to Roll’ skill, making it easier to successfully perform a recovery roll after falling. While it won’t prevent all falls, it’s a useful ability that can help players use fewer bandages and potentially avoid fatal drops.
