How to Get Compacted Coal in Satisfactory

As a seasoned Satisfactory player with countless hours under my belt, I’ve learned to appreciate the subtleties of the game, and Compacted Coal is one such delightful nuance. While it may not be an immediate priority for every player, understanding its importance can make your factory run smoother and more efficiently.

The game Satisfactory offers an abundance of materials essential for crafting, and while it’s often beneficial to initiate the automation process for resource production as early as possible, there are instances where starting the production of a particular resource immediately isn’t necessarily crucial.

Compressed Coal, although not always essential for crafting, can prove beneficial when utilized effectively. This kind of energy source powers coal generators. However, the question remains: Is it wise to invest time and resources into automating its production?

How to Unlock Compacted Coal

Required Milestone: Tier 3 – Coal Power

How to Get Compacted Coal in Satisfactory

Compacted Coal cannot be found as a reward in the normal milestone rewards; it’s actually a MAM reward. The MAM is a building that many players neglect at the start, causing them to miss out on a lot of potential gains. It is essentially a research station that lets them unlock new items and equipment recipes, such as the Blade Runners.

In the Sulfur research tree, you’ll find Compacted Coal as a third-tier reward. To access it, just complete two prerequisite tasks first. Fortunately, this resource can be obtained relatively quickly compared to other rewards, as you only need to pass a few milestones beforehand. If a player discovers 10 pieces of Sulfur independently, they can unlock the initial node in the research tree, which significantly speeds up the scanning of sulfur. This advantage makes it easier for them to gather more sulfur for the subsequent two tiers ahead.

To unlock the entire tree until Compacted Coal, players will need the following resources:

  • x60 Sulfur, x50 Modular Frame, x100 Rotor, x25 Coal, x1 Hard Drive

Hard drives from crashed spaceships can be discovered at various locations worldwide. At these locations, you’ll find drop pods that only grant access to the hard drive once certain conditions are met by the player. Unlike some games with randomly generated maps, the positions of these crash sites in Satisfactory remain consistent across players due to its handcrafted map design. These hard drives can be found frequently in almost any biome, making them accessible if players take the time to explore their surroundings.

How to Craft Compacted Coal in Satisfactory

Fusion: Coal and Sulfur

Creating Compacted Coal involves just a few easy steps. To get started, you’ll need both sulfur and coal at hand. The fundamental recipe for it consists of combining 5 units of Coal and an equal amount of 5 units of Sulfur. This mixture then transforms into 5 units of Compacted Coal in your Assembler. It’s worth noting that Compacted Coal is also generated as a byproduct during the production process for Ionized Fuel and Rocket Fuel, but that happens later in the game.

Finding Sulfur deposits is challenging when crafting Compacted Coal because these mineral sources are quite rare across the game map, with Uranium being even scarcer. If you stumble upon one early in your gameplay, it’s strongly recommended to start mining it immediately due to its high value. You may find a few nodes scattered throughout each starting biome, but they are most abundant near the Northern Forest.

Simplifying the process of creating Compacted Coal becomes effortless with the necessary resources at hand. Just link the outlets from your mining equipment to several assemblers, then route the assemblers’ outputs to a storage box.

Is Compacted Coal Worth It?

A Niche Product for Overachievers

In simpler terms, Compacted Coal isn’t a resource that everyone encounters while playing. It has limited uses, but it becomes quite beneficial if you manage to establish its production. It serves as an alternative fuel option for Power Plants running on coal, and it is significantly more efficient compared to regular coal.

Typically, they burn between 15 standard coal pieces every minute. But interestingly, they now manage to get by with just 7 compacted coal pieces per minute, all while keeping the power output consistent. This means that compacted coal is twice as efficient as regular coal when it comes to energy usage.

Additionally, Compacted Coal can be used in alternate recipes, combining with Heavy Oil Residue or fuel to make Turbofuel, a great fuel source for your jetpack. It can also be used to replace coal in the recipe for black powder, increasing the total amount of black powder you can produce.
