PlayStation 6 Will Have AMD Chip With Backwards Compatibility, It’s Claimed

As a dedicated gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that Sony’s decision to stick with AMD for the PS6 processor is music to my ears. Having grown up with PlayStation consoles and witnessing the magic they’ve brought to gaming, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia knowing that the partnership between Sony and AMD continues.

Developments for the upcoming PlayStation 6 (PS6) are already underway, with significant choices regarding the console’s design and features already finalized.

As per recent reports from Reuters, it appears that the upcoming PlayStation 6 (PS6) will continue to utilize an AMD processor within its system. It was noted that Sony had discussions with Intel, but ultimately, the deal shifted towards AMD in the year 2022.

The report claims that one of the disputes between Intel and Sony involved how much profit Intel would make from each processor. On top of the price dispute, backwards compatibility is said to be a major sticking point with Sony.

According to the report, shifting from AMD, who produced the PlayStation 5 chip, to Intel could have posed a challenge regarding backwards compatibility, a topic that was under debate among Intel’s engineers and executives in discussions with Sony. Ensuring backward compatibility with previous versions of the PlayStation would have been expensive and required significant engineering effort.

It’s unclear at this point if the new console will only support games from the PS5 and PS4 generations, or if it might also play older titles from the PlayStation catalog.
