PlayStation Co-CEO Has Stated Consoles Will be ‘At the Core’ of Their Business

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can wholeheartedly attest to the unique charm and convenience that PlayStation consoles have offered me throughout the years. While I’ve dabbled in mobile and PC gaming, nothing beats the seamless experience of turning on my PlayStation console and instantly accessing my purchased content without having to deal with advertisements or the hassle of setting up a PC.

In a recent discussion, it was made clear by one of PlayStation’s joint CEOs that despite providing games on multiple platforms, console systems remain fundamental to their business operations.

In an interview with Nikkei (through VGC), Sony’s Co-CEO Hideaki Nishino highlighted the unique aspects of PlayStation compared to other gaming platforms like mobile and PC. He pointed out that mobile games often have numerous advertisements, while setting up a PC can be challenging. Conversely, PlayStation consoles offer players an immediate access to their purchased content as soon as they switch them on.

Nishino emphasizes that the PlayStation store offers users an intuitive process when buying new games, with all content organized in a clear and straightforward way. Later, the CEO discussed expanding PlayStation’s market share by producing content designed for PC systems. He explained that while consoles will continue to be central to their business, developing games for other platforms allows them to cater to a wider audience.

Over the past few years, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the company behind PlayStation, has made some of its console titles available for PC gaming, such as God of War (2018), Horizon Zero Dawn, Returnal, and others. Interestingly, these games were launched on PC several months following their initial release on consoles. The co-CEO of SIE anticipates that this approach, which focuses on releasing the main installments initially for console gamers, may stimulate PC players’ desire to purchase a PlayStation console in order to play the games as soon as they come out.
