- Players can relive the past with mods like Blade of Olympus & God of War History Collection, featuring iconic weapons from the series.
- HungrySharkz’s God of War History Collection 2 adds familiar mods, bringing back Nemesis Whip, Claws of Hades, and more for nostalgia.
As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours swinging those Blades of Chaos and wielding that Leviathan Axe, I must say, the modding community for God of War is nothing short of extraordinary! HungrySharkz, in particular, has been a game-changer with their God of War History Collection and its sequel.
In the mid-2000s, the God of War series stood out as a widely recognized and impactful hack & slash franchise that was noteworthy even alongside popular titles like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. Despite its seemingly straightforward gameplay, mastering the game required skill due to its challenging platforming elements and intense fights against creatures straight from Greek mythology. Interestingly, Sonic the Hedgehog even attempted to mimic some of Kratos’ moves in the Werehog character for Sonic Unleashed.
By the 2010s, it was clear that the series required a refresh, and instead of attempting to completely overhaul it as they did with God of War: Ascension, they introduced a new version in God of War (2018). Even after the final installment, God of War Ragnarok, many fans still favor Kratos’ initial journey through Midgard alongside his son, Atreus. This preference is even more pronounced now that its PC release offers an array of incredible weapon modifications, a feature that every fan should explore.
Spoiler Warning: This list contains story spoilers from God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok.
7 Spartan Viking Shield
Defense Comes In Norse & Spartan Style
- Created by Beasdfge
Initially, the shield in the 2018 version of God of War takes a back seat to Kratos’ other weapons due to its primary function being defense and counter-attacks. However, this doesn’t stop it from looking impressive, as demonstrated by Beasdfge’s Spartan Viking Shield mod which gives it an attractive update with elements of Norse and Spartan design.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase that as:
6 Minecraft Diamond Axe
Crafting A Beat Down
- Created by HungrySharkz
Instead of focusing intensely on weapon designs, why not opt for a playful approach? With the upcoming “Minecraft” film, fans might be in a jovial mood to let Baldur experience the pixelated sharpness of the Diamond Axe. If it can swiftly fell trees, it could certainly reduce him and other adversaries to their smaller dimensions.
Now, thanks to the creative mind behind the mod, HungrySharkz, gamers can swap out the Leviathan Axe for a dazzling Diamond Axe. It’s purely an aesthetic change, so players will still need to enhance it to boost its power. However, they no longer have to fret about it shattering after a certain number of hits!
5 Blade Of Olympus
It Finished Off One God — It Can Finish Off Another
- Created by GustavoPredador and Zone-X Matt Marcos RC
It took some traditional fans a considerable amount of time to embrace the new gameplay style in God of War (2018). The shift to Norse mythology was acceptable, but the over-the-shoulder perspective, axe combat, and commanding a boy were quite different from the high-angle camera, sword fighting, and combos characteristic of the original series. However, they can’t revert back to the old style, but they could incorporate more elements reminiscent of the classic games.
GustavoPredador and Zone-X Matt Marcos’ mod pack restores a youthful appearance to Kratos, making him resemble his depiction from the Greek games. Instead of the Leviathan Axe, this mod replaces it with the Blade of Olympus. Although it may seem unusual seeing young Kratos wielding it as he did with the axe in God of War 2, 3, and Ragnarok, it fits perfectly within his new, younger form.
4 God Of War Ragnarok Weapons
Offers An Apocalyptic Beatdown
- Created by HungrySharkz
If players prefer not to dwell on the past, they can instead focus on the future by swapping out all of Kratos’ gear for his weapons from “God of War Ragnarok”. The Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos now sport their golden designs, which are reminiscent of their Level 9 upgrades in the Norse sequel. Notably, these new designs still accommodate different pommel upgrades.
Instead of Mjölnir functioning as an axe with modifications at its pommel, this mod allows players to use it more like a regular axe but without those specific pommel edits. Consequently, Thor’s hammer doesn’t have the extra features or bonuses that the axe can acquire, but the appeal of performing pommel-less runs lies in demonstrating style while wielding the hammer against Draugr, trolls, and even Thor’s less intelligent offspring.
3 Tyr’s Weapons
When One God Of War Trades Weapons With Another
- Created by GustavoPredador and Zone-X Matt Marcos RC
In a surprising twist, the game God of War Ragnarok features a substantial and complimentary DLC where Tyr assists Kratos in squarely dealing with his past, particularly within Valhalla. This segment includes Tyr engaging Kratos in a sequence of challenging boss battles, each featuring distinctive weapons he acquired during his journeys across various dimensions. Alongside his iconic spear, Tyr also uses a Aztec macuahuitl, a Japanese katana, and an Egyptian khopesh.
Instead of limiting him to only one weapon, consider allowing players to replace the Axe with any of Tyr’s weapons. Some might seem out of place due to their original design for Tyr’s large build, like the macuahuitl and spear. However, others, such as the katana and khopesh, fit perfectly for the Ghost of Sparta. Until he gets a chance to visit Egypt or Japan himself, this modification will let Kratos use these iconic weapons effectively.
2 God Of War History Collection
When Kratos Can’t Let Go Of His Past
- Created by HungrySharkz
In other words, the Leviathan Axe can be customized with various modifications or even completely swapped out, but it’s Kratos’ Blades of Chaos that are most frequently modified. These weapons have been associated with Kratos since the initial game, and they underwent several visual changes throughout the Greek series, but they returned to their Chaotic form for the remake.
HungrySharkz’ God of War History Bundle compiles all these distinct designs for enthusiasts to browse, allowing them to choose from the original Blades of Chaos (from the first God of War) or the Blades of Athena (from God of War 2), the Blades of Exile (from God of War 3) or even the Chaos design (from God of War: Ascension).
Only one of these mods can be used at a time, and any one of them is a neat blast from the past.
1 God Of War History Collection 2
Bringing Hades On Earth To The Norse Realms
- Created by HungrySharkz
HungrySharkz’s God of War History Collection 2 incorporates some well-loved modifications, such as the self-created Blade of Olympus, reminiscent of God of War 2 and 3, and variations of young Kratos. However, it expands beyond the Blades of Chaos this time. It reintroduces the Nemesis Whip and Claws of Hades from God of War 3, including their glowing visuals – although without their magical attacks for now.
It also throws in mods for the Axe, replacing it with the Blade of Artemis from God of War 1 or the hefty Barbarian Hammer from God of War 2. The mod also includes the Fish Blades, which are basically two fish at the end of Kratos’ chains. It was a cut gag weapon for God of War 1 that would go well with his Cod of War armor to deliver piscine-based retribution on Midgard.
