In the game of Frostpunk 2, one significant challenge is managing hunger within the city. If left unattended, hunger can lead to an increase in Disease and Tension, while simultaneously hindering Population Growth. Therefore, it’s crucial for players to maintain control over their city’s food supply. This guide aims to provide strategies for handling hunger effectively in Frostpunk 2, assisting players in navigating this essential aspect of the game.

Users should occasionally hover their cursor over the bowl symbol located beneath the Resource Drawer at the top of the screen. This action will display a panel, providing information about Hunger in the City. If Hunger is shown as “Absent,” maintaining it as “Stable” is fine. However, if Hunger is anything other than “Absent,” or if it’s “Growing,” players should employ these methods to reduce it to “Diminishing.

Food Scarcity

In case a player fails to satisfy their city’s need for food, the situation known as Food Scarcity will ensue, leading to an increase in Hunger. Consequently, players aiming to reduce their city’s Hunger should prioritize maintaining a food surplus to avoid Food Scarcity. Here are some tactics strategy game enthusiasts can employ to fulfill their city’s food requirements, and they will recognize they have conquered Food Scarcity when the bar beneath the plant icon at the screen’s top turns golden:

If a player accumulates an ample supply of food, they can still have extra food even if the figure associated with the plant symbol is less than zero. Yet, it’s crucial for players to increase this number to avoid Food Shortage, which will be activated once their stockpile is depleted. City-builder enthusiasts may want to employ strategies to raise this count before it reaches zero.

  • Build additional Food Districts on Food-producing tiles. Each one provides 50 Food output by default.

  • Expand Food Districts. Expanded Food Districts provide 60 Food output by default.

  • Research Ideas in these nodes, which give access to Buildings that increase Food output, and build them in Districts:
    • Hothouses (Idea Tree: Resources). Built in Food Districts.

    • Panaceum Factory (Idea Tree: Society). Built in Industrial Districts. This is a Radical Idea that requires progress with Reason.

Constructing a Greenhouse within a Food Zone grants this area the “Over-Fertilizing” capability. To activate this feature, simply click on the Food Zone and then select the “Over-Fertilizing” icon at the base of the information panel that appears, which in turn boosts Food Production Efficiency. However, be aware that the “Over-Fertilizing” process may also lead to an escalation of Disease in Frostpunk 2.

  • Activate the “Emergency Shifts” ability in Food Districts. This ability increases Production Efficiency, but it also decreases Trust.
  • Enact Laws that target Food. Here is a list of those Laws along with details about how they are made available in the Council Hall:
    • Food Additives: Forged Additives or Chemical Additives (Council: Surival). Available immediately.
    • Childhood: Mandatory School (Council: Society). Available immediately.
  • Increase overall Production Efficiency to improve Food output in Food Districts. While several options for increasing [LINK]Production Efficiency in Frostpunk 2 have already been noted, here are more than players can pursue:
    • Research Waste Heat Conversion: Heat Overclocking (Idea Tree: Resources), and enact it as a Law (Council: Survival).
    • Research Work Compensation: Efficiency Bonus (Idea Tree: City), and enact it as a Law (Council: City).
    • Research Labour Organisation: Labour Oversight (Idea Tree: City), and enact it as a Law (Council: City).
    • Research Workplace Control: Empowered Management (Idea Tree: City), and enact it as a Law (Council: City). This is a Radical Idea that requires progress with Merit.
    • Research an idea in Workers’ Housing (Idea Tree: City), and build the unlocked Building in an appropriate District.
    • Research Drugs Manufactory: Stimulants Manufactory (Idea Tree: City), and build the unlocked Building in an Industrial District. This is a Radical Idea that requires progress with Merit.
    • Research Rail Hubs (Idea Tree: Hubs), and build them near Food Districts.
    • Enact Basic Necessities: Paid Essentials (Council: City).

  • Find locations in the Frostland that generate Food, and extract resources from them. Some of these locations (Harvesting Areas) can be exploited simply by dedicating Frostland Teams to them, while others (Outposts) must be connected to the City with a [LINK]Trail or Skyway in Frostpunk 2.

To speed up the food supply, players should explore an Idea located in Harvester Hangers (from the Idea Tree: Frostland), then build the structure they unlock within a Logistics District.

  • Decrease Population by sending people to an established Colony. This option will become available as players explore Frostpunk 2‘s Frostland, though they will still need to take care of the transported Populatin’s Food demand when they reach their new home.
