The Xbox Game Pass mobile application has been officially discontinued, signifying the conclusion of its independent operation. Roughly a year and six months following the cessation of new app downloads, Microsoft has taken it down from service.
In September 2023, Microsoft announced its intention to unify its Xbox mobile apps starting from September 2023, aiming to combine their functions into a single platform. This move involves gradually replacing the standalone Xbox Game Pass app, which provided users with options to explore the Game Pass library, manage subscriptions, and pre-install games remotely. Microsoft has assured that all these capabilities will be moved to the primary Xbox mobile app, ensuring Game Pass members can continue to use these features in a streamlined manner from a single location.
Since the Xbox Game Pass mobile app has been discontinued, Reddit user firewire_9000 noticed a goodbye message in Spanish (“Adios”) on its iOS page. Now that the shutdown is finalized, Xbox gamers will have to rely solely on the main Xbox mobile app for all Game Pass-related actions such as browsing the catalog, managing subscriptions, and receiving notifications about new game additions. Furthermore, Game Pass Ultimate members can still access and redeem their exclusive benefits within the updated Xbox application.
Some Xbox Users Preferred the Simplicity of the Old Game Pass App
With Microsoft transitioning to a more integrated experience for mobile users through this change, some might view it as an annoyance compared to the straightforward Game Pass app they were previously accustomed to. Critics argue that navigating the broader Xbox app, which encompasses various unrelated features, can seem disorganized and cluttered. Nevertheless, many gamers have managed to adjust to the updated system smoothly. It’s worth noting that the Xbox mobile app still allows for remote installations, enabling users to pre-load upcoming Game Pass titles onto their consoles just as they did with the previous app.
Despite some disappointment over the closure of the Xbox Game Pass app, the service has been thriving in other areas. In fact, nine games were added to Xbox Game Pass during March alone, such as the fresh release “Atomfall” and the widely-loved “College Football 25” by EA. The upcoming months promise even more excitement for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, with highly anticipated additions like “Doom: The Dark Ages”, “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4”, “South of Midnight”, and “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” on the horizon.
