For the First Time in Months, a Key Part of Overwatch 2's Future is Unclear

Key Takeaways

  • Overwatch 2’s future hero releases are currently uncertain, which is a big change from recent months, as fans knew the next three heroes following BlizzCon 2023.
  • New tank heroes are speculated for future releases based on existing character rotations and teases from Blizzard.
  • Fans have been discussing potential new tank heroes like Soundquake or Greta Knuckles, creating excitement for Season 14.

As a seasoned Overwatch 2 gamer with countless hours logged and victories celebrated (and lost, of course), I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement mixed with curiosity as we tread into uncharted territory. The game has always been a rollercoaster ride, delivering fresh content that keeps us hooked, and the current mystery surrounding the next hero is no exception.

As Overwatch 2 approaches its second birthday, it’s evident that the game has experienced numerous substantial transformations since its debut. Although it seems likely that the PvE missions from Overwatch 2 Season 6 might be scrapped, there have been considerable alterations to the fundamental gameplay modes. For example, the addition of passive healing in Season 9, tank enhancements in Season 11, and the anticipated reintroduction of 6v6 in Season 13 are just a few examples of the many changes that have taken place.

The game “Overwatch 2” has been consistently rolling out distinct updates, featuring new maps, gameplay modes, and narrative elements that keep players hooked and wanting more. Although there have been some debates, these enhancements have managed to maintain an active player community. However, one crucial aspect of the future plans for “Overwatch 2” remains unclear: who the next character will be that’s set to join the roster.

Overwatch 2 Typically Debuts New Heroes Every Other Season

In October of 2022, Overwatch 2 debuted with characters such as Kiriko, Junker Queen, and Sojourn. Fans were led to believe that Mauga would be unveiled as the next tank during the 2022 Overwatch League Grand Finals; however, they were taken aback when Ramattra was introduced instead. It wasn’t until later that Mauga became part of the game, but Lifeweaver and Illari came before him.

Sojourn made her initial debut in the
Overwatch 2
beta.

At BlizzCon 2023, it’s noteworthy that both Venture and Juno made their debut. The action hero, referred to as Venture, was spotlighted in a gameplay demonstration, whereas Juno, known as “Space Ranger” behind the scenes, is still under development. Given that Team 4 typically introduces a new character every other season, fans are now curious about who will be the next playable character after Season 13. This marks an unusual gap in the plans for Overwatch 2, as this section of its roadmap has been left undetermined for several months.

Fans Already Have Theories As To Whom Overwatch 2’s Next Tank Will Be

For the First Time in Months, a Key Part of Overwatch 2's Future is Unclear

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the potential hints dropped during BlizzCon 2023 that might suggest a new Overwatch 2 character. However, it’s crucial to stress that these are merely speculations since there’s no concrete evidence confirming their existence or their role in the game yet.

“Based on the current hero rotation, a tank hero for
Overwatch 2
seems likely to be next.”

There’s a theory among enthusiasts that characters from “Overwatch: Declassified,” such as the yet-to-be-released Overwatch character Soundquake, might be the tank for Season 14. Originating from a promotional image at the end of Overwatch’s 2014 Cinematic Trailer, Soundquake is believed to have joined Overwatch following the Omnic Crisis. He stands out due to his unique chest missiles. Interestingly, while there are several characters in the promotional image that haven’t been incorporated into the game yet, only Soundquake and Echo (who was unplayable by 2016 but is now part of the hero shooter) were prominently displayed at the time.

The prickly green hairstyle on the tank icon for the game character could suggest that character might be Greta Knuckles. In Venture’s gameplay during the internal build, we noticed this hairdo. Interestingly, Greta Knuckles, a relatively new character, is prominently displayed on posters and signs scattered around Arena (A) in the New Junk City map within Flashpoint. Although information about her is scarce, she’s known as a Junker gladiator. Notably, her green hair bears a striking resemblance to that of the character leaked at BlizzCon 2023, but it could just be a coincidence.

Based on Blizzard’s pattern of revealing new heroes at least a season in advance, it’s reasonable to expect that we’ll start hearing more about this enigmatic character within the upcoming months. With Overwatch 2 fans excitedly awaiting the shift back to 6v6 battles in Season 13 and the upcoming modifications to Clash, there’s plenty to get excited about. Here’s hoping Team 4 provides additional details on the next hero soon!
