As a seasoned adventurer who’s tamed my fair share of beasts, from the humble deer to the mighty Giant Horse, I can confidently say that Epona, with her regal mane and gentle temperament, is truly a treasure among mounts in Breath of the Wild. Her maxed out affection, coupled with her top-tier stats, makes her an ideal companion for any Link on his quest.

In the expansive, free-roaming landscape of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”, navigating from one location to another requires some distance covered on foot. Although fast travel is an option between towers and shrines within the game, initially, when Link visits a new spot for the first time, he must walk it. However, if players have successfully captured a horse, Link can opt to ride instead.

Riding a horse can significantly speed up travel between locations, and they tend to stay on established trails with minimal guidance from the rider. However, not all horses are created equal, so players aiming to traverse Hyrule should strive for the finest steeds available.

The Best Wild Horses in Breath of the Wild

4-star and 5-star Horses

In the vast open world of “Breath of the Wild,” you’ll encounter wild horses roaming freely. Interestingly, the most common horses in the wild have a spotted pattern and their stats are typically 3-star or lower; on the other hand, solid-colored horses generally boast higher stats. Rarely will you find any horse with more than a single 4-star stat or higher. If you’re aiming for better stats, your best bet would be to search areas north of Hyrule Ridge.

Five-star endurance horses are often located in the vicinity of Tanagar Canyon, specifically between Serene Stable and Maag No’rah Shrine. These horses may display different statistics. For instance, a horse with a 5-star Speed rating will never possess 5-star Stamina or Strength. The wild horses in Hyrule Ridge are typically classified as follows:

The Giant Horse

“Ganondorf’s” Horse

In comparison to other horses, the Giant Horse from Breath of the Wild may not be as swift, but it stands out as one of the game’s three distinctive equines. As its name suggests, this is a large black stallion with an orange mane, reminiscent of a particular character. Contrary to its somewhat ominous appearance, the Giant Horse isn’t any more hostile than a typical horse. However, it’s widely recognized as the most challenging to tame among all horses in Breath of the Wild. It takes Link more than two full stamina rings to subdue this horse.

The colossal steed wanders across the expansive Taobab Plains, located southwest of the Owa Daim Shrine. To calm it without startling its companions, you should utilize a paraglider from afar and gently settle on its back. After calming it down, take the tamed horse to the nearest stable for registration. In the game “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” the closest stable for this Giant Horse is the Highland Stable.

In contrast to other horses, this colossal steed lacks stamina, preventing you from speeding him up using the A-button for a gallop. Additionally, altering his mane is impossible regardless of your affection level towards him. Furthermore, he can’t be outfitted with the Ancient Horse Gear. However, he boasts a 5-star Strength, allowing him to charge headfirst into virtually any creature or small monster and eliminate it in a single blow.

Upon arrival, I engage in conversation with Toffa, an NPC outside the inn, who offers me a quest – the search for the Royal White Stallion. This horse is rumored to be a direct descendant of Princess Zelda’s steed from a century past. What sets him apart from other horses is his pristine white coat and extraordinary stats. Once I accept this Royal White Stallion Side Quest, my path leads me to the picturesque Nima Plain. This beautiful location lies just west of the Sanidin Park Ruins, where one of Link’s cherished photo memories can be restored. The Royal White Stallion boasts impressive stats as follows:

Epona

Horse of Legend

In the game “Breath of the Wild”, Epona is Link’s well-known steed. However, it’s only possible to acquire Epona by scanning the amiibo figure of Smash Bros. Link. This amiibo rune becomes accessible once you’ve departed from the Great Plateau. Despite none of Epona’s attributes surpassing a 5-star rating, she remains one of the best horses in the game. Similar to the Giant Horse, you can’t customize Epona’s mane or attach the Ancient Bridle or Ancient Saddle to her, and you can’t alter her name either. Yet, she has a Mild Temperament, making her easy to handle, even when her stamina runs out. An additional advantage is that she comes with maximum affection when you register her at the stable.

Untameable Horses in Breath of the Wild

Lord of the Mountain, Stalhorses

In the mesmerizing world of Breath of the Wild, I’ve discovered that certain mounts, like deer, bears, spectral steeds, and spirit horses, can’t be tamed at the stables. There are also exceptional horses, such as the Stalhorse and the legendary Lord of the Mountain, which add a unique twist to my adventures.

Stalhorses are skeletal horses commonly mounted by bokoblins. These creatures don’t have a living heart and perish at dawn (4am in-game). You can’t register them, and their stats are quite feeble. However, if you hop on one while sporting the Radiant Set, the Stalhorse’s abilities will be enhanced significantly. Riding one without the Radiant Set would mean dealing with its base stats, which are roughly as follows:

The Lord of the Mountain, Satori, has infinite stamina. He is amazingly difficult to tame, moreso than the Giant Horse, so if you’re set on taming him, bring loads of stamina food and equip stealth-enhancing gear. The Stealth Set/Sheikah Gear is ideal for sneaking up on Satori. You can tell if Satori will appear if Satori Mountain is glowing at night. You’ll find Satori and a pack of Blupees by the lake near the Mogg Latan Shrine.

In this game, Satori is the unique mount that boasts 5-stars in all its attributes. Pressing the A-button will allow you to gallop at a faster pace without depleting your Stamina Wheels. However, keep in mind that you can’t feed Satori because he vanishes when you dismount him. Despite not being registerable, you are able to show Satori to a stable owner and witness their response.
