The Next Battlefield Sounds Like a Dream for Fans of BF3, BF4

As a gamer with over two decades of Battlefield under my belt, it feels like I’ve seen it all – from the gritty realism of Battlefield 3 to the historical adventures of Battlefield 1. And let’s not forget the not-so-smooth landing of Battlefield 2042. But with the recent revelations about the next Battlefield, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of hope returning to my heart like a well-placed grenade in a tight spot.

The Battlefield community has faced some challenging times in recent years. Fans were expecting a more traditional historical military shooter with Battlefield V, but it fell short of expectations. Battlefield 2042 had an unsuccessful debut due to a lack of content, technical glitches, and significant alterations to core features and systems. However, Battlefield still has a fighting chance.

For several months now, Electronic Arts (EA) has been releasing hints about the upcoming Battlefield title, revealing that teams from Motive, DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect are collaborating on the project. On September 16, IGN’s Kat Bailey published an interview with Vince Zampella, head of Respawn and EA Studios Organization, providing a sneak peek into the new Battlefield game. This small glimpse has already ignited enthusiasm among fans of Battlefield 3 and 4.

The Next Battlefield Is Catering Directly to Fans of Battlefield 3 and 4

Battlefield Is Returning to a Modern Setting

Very early on in Kat Bailey’s IGN report, it’s confirmed that the next Battlefield game is returning to a modern setting, as opposed to the historical settings of titles like Battlefield 1 and V, or the near-future setting of Battlefield 2042. In response to being asked about the decision to return to a modern setting for the next Battlefield entry, Vince Zampella states, “if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern.” Zampella then says, “we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is.”

It is evident right away, based on these comments, that the creators of the next ‘Battlefield’ game are well aware of the type of experience long-time series enthusiasts seek in the upcoming installment. This becomes even more obvious as IGN’s conversation with Zampella progresses.

Battlefield Is Going Back to Basics With Maps

The recently published IGN report supports the claim that the massive 128-player maps featured in Battlefield 2042 will not reappear in the upcoming installment of the franchise. Instead, as mentioned by Zampella, they are working on a design that resembles previous Battlefields more closely. He expressed a preference for compact, well-structured game spaces over larger ones. While it’s not definitive, it strongly suggests that 64-player maps may return to the Battlefield series based on Zampella’s remarks.

The Next Battlefield is Bringing Back Classes

A significant issue raised about Battlefield 2042 was its Specialist system, with some gamers contending that it made the game resemble a hero shooter rather than a traditional military first-person shooter (FPS). In the upcoming Battlefield game, IGN has verified that this feature will not be included, as Zampella explained, “The Specialist won’t return. Instead, we’re focusing on classes, which have been integral to Battlefield since its launch in 2002.” Classes are a fundamental part of the Battlefield franchise and what distinguishes it from other military shooters, as Zampella emphasized.

The Next Battlefield Will Start Community Testing Next Year

One last detail in IGN’s recent Battlefield report that’s important to note is that EA will be introducing some kind of community testing for the game in 2025. Zampella sheds more light on this in the report, saying, “We have a program that we’re going to announce next year around getting more community in, because that’s kind of the core of what we have to do — get the community back on our side, get that trust back.”

From these comments, it appears that the developers of Battlefield are well-aware of the reasons fans felt let down by Battlefield 2042. To rebuild trust, the upcoming Battlefield game is planning to return the franchise to its roots and focus primarily on elements that have consistently proven successful in the past.
