Mass Effect Fans Shouldn't Sleep on Priority: Hagalaz

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can attest to the enduring allure of the Mass Effect franchise. The long-awaited Mass Effect 4 has been shrouded in mystery since its announcement, leaving fans like me hanging on tenterhooks. But alas, it seems we’re not going to get our fix anytime soon, with Dragon Age: The Veilguard stealing the limelight.

17 years have passed since I first laid my hands on Mass Effect, a Sci-Fi gaming franchise that continues to captivate me like no other. Yet, the departure of Mass Effect: Andromeda left a bittersweet taste, and we’re eagerly waiting for a sequel to restore its former glory. The announcement of Mass Effect 4 back in December 2020 stirred excitement within the community, but since then, it feels like we’ve been left hanging, with very little information revealed about the game.

As a die-hard gamer, I can’t hide my excitement about “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” that’s set to release in just a few weeks, even though “Mass Effect 4” was announced two years prior. This early launch of “Dragon Age” seems to have “Mass Effect 4” waiting in the wings for a bit longer. However, there’s another intriguing “Mass Effect” game on its way that might just scratch that itch, and it looks promising for fans of both the series and tabletop RPGs alike.

Mass Effect and Board Game Fans Should Keep an Eye on Mass Effect – Priority: Hagalaz

Mass Effect – Priority: Hagalaz Explained

Developed by Eric M. Lang and Calvin Wong Tze Loon and published by Modiphius, Mass Effect: The Board Game – Priority: Hagalaz is a cooperative 1-4 player game that centers around an engaging narrative on a tabletop setting. It aims to mimic the action-RPG style from the Mass Effect series, allowing players to assume the role of Commander Shepard as they delve into the investigation of a wrecked Cerberus vessel on the turbulent planet Hagalaz.

In the game as Shepard, you get to gather a group of renowned characters, including Garrus, Wrex, Liara, and Tali, each having miniature figurines in the main game collection. Battling foes and accomplishing tasks will give rewards not only for you but also for your teammates, enabling them to gain new skills. This way, players can progressively shape their Shepard character according to preferred roles such as Sentinel, Soldier, Vanguard, or Adept, fitting into the series’ typical character categories. Additionally, there are optional Loyalty Missions available for your teammates to strengthen their bonds.

The board game adaptation of Mass Effect – specifically the Hagalaz mission – incorporates a narrative structure that mirrors the choice-driven storyline from the Mass Effect trilogy. During gameplay, players will encounter situations where they can make choices, some of which have immediate and long-term effects on the unfolding story. Notably, these decisions may also impact an in-game metric called “War Readiness.

The upcoming release of “Mass Effect: The Board Game – Priority: Hagalaz” is scheduled for October. The main set consists of rulebooks, storybooks, a campaign board, six miniature figures, numerous dice and tokens, and adversary markers. This initial set is estimated to cost around $50. If players wish, they can also purchase additional miniatures that represent the game’s antagonists as expansion packs.

Mass Effect – Priority: Hagalaz Looks Like a Dense Tabletop Game

As a fellow gamer diving into the world of Mass Effect: The Board Game – Priority: Hagalaz, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. From what I gather, the premise behind this game is fascinating, but it seems like it might be a bit complex, especially for those of us new to story-driven, co-operative tabletop RPGs.
