Can Mortal Kombat Become the Ultimate Cross-Franchise Fighter?

It seems that Warner Bros.’ foray into the video game world hasn’t been as successful as they had hoped. Games like ‘Gotham Knights’ didn’t meet expectations, ‘Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’ was a flop last year, Monolith Productions and their Wonder Woman game have closed down, and unfortunately, the support for ‘MultiVersus’ has ceased with its online servers scheduled to shut off on May 30.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been following the journey of MultiVersus since its early access phase in 2022. It had an impressive start, no doubt, but as time went on, it seemed to struggle to keep players engaged for the long haul. The game’s prolonged quiet period didn’t help matters either. After its official launch last May, MultiVersus just couldn’t seem to regain the momentum it once had. While the news of its cancellation is unfortunate, I can’t say I’m entirely surprised.

MultiVersus will undoubtedly leave behind a peculiar legacy, but one that Mortal Kombat might find intriguing to build upon.

Mortal Kombat Could Pick Up The Ball MultiVersus Dropped

MultiVersus’ Roster Never Lived Up to its True Potential

From the beginning, MultiVersus boasted a compelling concept. With games such as Super Smash Bros. and Brawlhalla popularizing crossover platform fighters, Warner Bros., with its extensive library of iconic franchises teeming with potential fighting game characters (both heroes and villains), seemed like the ideal choice to enter this genre.

The initial phase of the game MultiVersus was as promising as anticipated. A total of 17 characters graced the Beta lineup, with 16 of them hailing from a diverse selection of Warner Bros. properties. These included beloved cartoons such as Steven Universe and Adventure Time, DC comics favorites like Batman and Superman, and mature series like Game of Thrones.

Over its five post-release seasons, the game MultiVersus introduced a grand total of 20 new playable characters. These newcomers brought a lot of diversity to the roster, featuring characters such as Samurai Jack, the PowerPuff Girls, Beetlejuice, Agent Smith, Jason Voorhees, and Marvin the Martian. However, there are still many popular Warner Bros. characters yet to be added to the game. But, keep in mind, there’s a chance that more beloved characters from the WB universe might join MultiVersus in the future.

Mortal Kombat Should Fill The Void Left by MultiVersus

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice how the Mortal Kombat universe has been expanding its horizons! Back in 2011, we saw the addition of Freddy Krueger and Kratos from God of War to our favorite fighting franchise. Then, Mortal Kombat X took it a step further by introducing characters like Alien, Predator, Jason, and Leatherface. Now, it seems that guest fighters have become an integral part of the game, with Mortal Kombat 1 boasting six such characters in its current roster, which accounts for about 17% of all characters. It’s fascinating to see how these diverse characters enrich the Mortal Kombat experience!

It wouldn’t feel unexpected if the next installment of Mortal Kombat continued the storyline from where MultiVersus ended, given that both are owned by Warner Bros. Since Mortal Kombat could introduce a variety of characters from other Warner Bros. franchises, notably those long-desired but not included in MultiVersus, such as fighters from Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter. However, these characters would need to align with Mortal Kombat’s M-rated gameplay, which may not be an issue for Game of Thrones characters, and should pose minimal problems for the Lord of the Rings cast.
