Injustice 3 Would Have One Upside a New Mortal Kombat Wouldnt

As a die-hard fan of NetherRealm Studios and their captivating take on the DC universe, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation that’s bordering on electric excitement. The Injustice series has been a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions, and the idea of another installment is music to my ears.

In the 2010s, NetherRealm Studios generally adhered to a recurring schedule for their video game launches. The rejuvenation of the Mortal Kombat franchise was kick-started in 2011 with the release of Mortal Kombat. Two years later, this foundation served as the basis for Injustice: Gods Among Us, a game centered on the DC universe that focused on combat. In 2015, NetherRealm brought out Mortal Kombat X, which built upon and further developed their fighting game formula, as did its precursor before it with Injustice 2 in 2017. However, unlike previous releases, a third entry for the Injustice series didn’t appear following Mortal Kombat 11 when it was released in 2019.

Previously, we were treated to Mortal Kombat 11, but last year saw the arrival of its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 1. Since then, Ed Boon, NetherRealm Studios’ Chief Creative Officer, has dropped hints about a new Injustice game on numerous occasions. In an interview with The Direct in July, he stated that he would be taken aback if they never returned to the Injustice universe again. While this doesn’t confirm Injustice 3 is in development, it certainly indicates that it’s only a matter of time. And when Injustice 3 eventually drops, it might just have an edge over Mortal Kombat – a unique advantage it currently lacks.

Injustice 3 Could Bring Back The Injustice Comic Series

The Injustice Comic Series Is More Than Just a Retelling of The Game’s Events

In January 2013, several months prior to the game’s release, a comic titled “Injustice” became available online. This first issue, penned by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Jheremy Raapack, marked the beginning of an extended series of comics set in a unique DC universe as depicted in the video game.

For a span of three years, five distinct installments of the “Injustice” comic series were published, each representing a year in the “Injustice” storyline. The first volume, “Injustice: Year One,” depicts Joker murdering Lois Lane and driving Superman to insanity. In the second year, Superman engages in battle with the Green Lantern Corps. The third year introduces magical characters like Doctor Fate and Constantine, who eventually join Batman’s growing rebellion. The fourth year portrays Ares exploiting the ongoing conflict between the Regime and the Rebellion to amass power, while the fifth year follows Batman and Lex Luthor as they attempt to contact another universe for assistance, leading directly into the storyline of the initial “Injustice” video game.

Leading up to the May 2017 launch of “Injustice 2”, DC released additional comics linked to the video game series. These comics, spanning from December 2016 to July 2017, included “Injustice: Ground Zero” which offered a fresh take on the events of the initial game through Harley Quinn’s eyes. A prequel comic bridge between “Injustice” and its sequel, titled simply as “Injustice 2”, was also published from April 2017 to October 2018.

The latest “Injustice” comic book series is its most unusual, featuring a storyline titled “Injustice vs. Masters of the Universe” that spanned from September 2018 to March 2019. This comic unfolds after the ending of “Injustice 2,” where Superman rebuilds his Regime. To thwart Superman, Batman and the Insurgency enlist the help of He-Man and the rest of the Masters of the Universe.

Injustice 3 Should Resurrect The Injustice Comic Series

The Injustice comics may sometimes move slowly, but they’ve been valuable reading for enthusiasts of NetherRealm’s fighting games. These comics enrich the universe and characters more than the game’s story modes do. If/when Injustice 3 is released, it would be exciting to witness another comic series centered around NetherRealm’s dark DC world, allowing the developer to address some narrative gaps between installments.
