Steam’s Player Count Has Reached a New All-Time High Record

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the growth and vitality of Steam are truly astounding. The sheer number of concurrent users reaching 38 million is nothing short of incredible! It’s like being at a massive LAN party that spans the globe.

Steam consistently attracts a large number of gamers, solidifying its status as the top digital marketplace for PC games. Just moments ago, the platform set a new record for simultaneous user activity, boasting an impressive 38,367,277 active users. The surge in Steam’s popularity is remarkable – in 2020, concurrent user numbers peaked at approximately 18 million.

That’s a Lot of Gaming

Approximately 12 million out of the 38 million total users were engaged in gaming at the time the new record was set. Lately, several games have significantly boosted user activity on our platform.

Initially, there are five popular games to mention. Among them is the highly anticipated sequel of Counter-Strike 2, which remains Valve’s most played game ever, boasting a staggering 1.46 million concurrent players at its peak. Following this, we have PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) with approximately 787 thousand simultaneous players at its highest point, Dota 2 with around 731 thousand players, Black Myth: Wukong with slightly over half a million (533 thousand), and Naraka: Bladepoint with nearly 300 thousand concurrent players.

Fifth position is held by ‘Banana’, an unusual, virtual currency-generating game. This game gained popularity earlier in the year when players discovered they could potentially earn hundreds of dollars just by clicking a banana symbol. However, it’s been affected heavily by automated activities, leading to an overestimation of the active player count.

For shame.

Elsewhere, more games than ever are being played on Steam – and more are being released.

By way of a comparison, I’ll point out that in 2020, 9,699 gamers were released on Steam. In 2024, that number hit 14,422, another all-time high for the platform. In 2006 – which is as far back as records go – just 71 games were released on Steam. From the single-dev indie games to the AAA titles, everything is finding a home on Steam.

By January 2024, an estimate put the number of distinct games on Steam at over 73,000. This figure doesn’t include downloadable content, expansions, or extra game materials. It’s a significant contributor to the PC gaming market, and it might easily reach more than 40 million simultaneous users in the near future.
