PlayStation's 30th Anniversary Collection Explained

As a gaming veteran who’s witnessed the evolution of consoles since the days of 8-bit pixelated graphics, I can confidently say that Sony’s PlayStation has been a constant companion throughout my journey. The announcement of the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection has sent a wave of nostalgia coursing through me.

2024 signifies the 30th anniversary for Sony’s family of PlayStation video game consoles, which originated back in 1994. The debut of the original PlayStation helped solidify Sony as a major player in the gaming industry, and since then, they’ve consistently introduced new systems. The PlayStation series has significantly impacted the gaming world, with over hundreds of millions of units sold, making it one of the enduring symbols within this field.

Of course, this year Sony has been marking a significant achievement, notably with the launch of the multiplayer game Astro Bot. However, this week, the company unveiled something special – the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection. This collection showcases refreshed designs for PlayStation 5 products, modeled after the original look of the first PlayStation console. With a revamped console design and some new accessories, Sony has introduced some attractive collectibles that let fans revisit the past while enjoying the present.

PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary Brings New Gear

A PlayStation 5 Pro With A PS1-Inspired Design

The biggest prize of the 30th Anniversary Collection is a PlayStation 5 Pro with the gray color scheme of the original PlayStation. This newly announced console revision has been a sticking point among fans for its high price tag, but this new collector’s revision could be a convincing grab for longtime PlayStation fans. The base model of the PlayStation 5 will not be receiving such a revision, though the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will receive one.

Here are two versions of paraphrasing:

A DualSense Controller With A Classic Twist

In addition to the console, Sony is also launching a DualSense controller design inspired by the original PlayStation. Just like the console, this controller sports a gray color scheme similar to the original DualShock controllers. The premium version of the console will also include a charging station for the controller that takes inspiration from PlayStation, but there’s no confirmation yet if they’ll sell the accessory separately.

The redesigned controller can be obtained in either the standard DualSense style or the DualSense Edge version. The basic console model will include a single traditional DualSense controller, while the premium console will come with both a DualSense and a DualSense Edge controller. Fear not, current PlayStation owners who are only interested in the controllers; standalone versions of both styles will also be available for purchase separately.

The standout item in the 30th Anniversary Collection is a special edition PlayStation 5, sporting the classic gray color design reminiscent of the original PlayStation.

Even PlayStation Portal Gets In On The Fun

Furthermore, Sony is planning to launch a fresh version of its PlayStation Portable device, known as the PlayStation Portal. This new product is similar to the Wii U’s GamePad controller and includes handles modeled after the traditional DualShock controllers. However, it’s important to note that neither console will include this device. Instead, it will be available separately for purchase on its own.

The prices for these upcoming products are yet to be announced, but they’ll become available on November 21. Starting from September 26, users with a PlayStation Network account can pre-order these products via the PlayStation Direct store (pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition won’t start until October 10). Some of these items like the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and DualSense controllers will also be available at certain retailers, but all other items can only be purchased through PlayStation Direct. So if you want to get your hands on these items and join in the 30-year celebration of PlayStation, don’t hesitate!
